I've just recieved my shiny new X1950XT at work, and opened up the box to check i had all the bits i need.... and guess what? It doesn't come with a PCI-e power adapter :O

So, looking around i found instructions on building a 2x4-pin molex to 6 pin adapter out of bits of dead PSU which i can find at work - so far so good...

What i'm not sure about is whether my PSU is going to be man enough for the job - the instructions recommend a 450W PSU, and i have a 430W Antec Truepower. Bearing in mind i'm using an Asrock Dual-VSTA mobo with C2D 6400, 2 SATA drives, 2 optical drives, several fans, and 1GB of DDR1 ram, am i going to be able to use my current PSU? Nothing is overclocked at the moment, it's all at stock speeds.

Otherwise, i guess i need to splash out on a new power supply as well! Hiper Type R 580W looks pretty good value - any other recomendations if i do need to buy one?

Cheers

For starters...........Well done for buying a X1950XT. An awesome piece of hardware (waits for the 8800 owners to slate the X1950XT!!).

I would say that you could just about get away with your current PSU. If you are going to overclock tho make sure you get at least a 580+. I have a Hiper type R that that powers my rig with no fuss @ all. Plus you get 2 PCI-e connectors and its module design.

Totally agree.

Although the Antecs are good PSUs so I don't see it being a problem.

Yeah the PSU should be fine, its got about 26a on the 12v rail so should be ample (lol good pun that :D ) cracking cards those for the prices, will cut through everything for a good while yet. :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I knew i wasn't wasting my money when i spent it on a quality PSU 3 years ago :) Just need to bug IT for an old PSU to butcher now and it'll all be sorted!
