hi, ive been having trouble with an ati saphire radeon x1950xt 256mb pic-e.
right where to start
ive had no end of trouble setting my new computer up, initially it would constantly lock up, installing windows, on desktop etc. tried everything and it was simply down to the tempremental asus p5n-e sli, it needs to be manually configured and not left on auto, volts had to be upped from default etc.
altho still not got ram to post in duel channel.
next, everything was up and running, its been running games, i havent overclocked it, infact setup atitool profiles to underclock it when not in a 3d app. regulator voltage was ~70.
note the psu i bought for the comp seems to be lost in the mail so ive had it running on my old 400w psu with some cable convertors 24pin/pci-e etc. i thought this was the problem at first with the pc locking up so i went and bought a 500w psu from pc world which i intend to take back. this didnt solve the problem so i knew it wasnt psu related. i therefore started to use the old 400w again. it had been running stable for a few days, then i installed a hl2 mod and ran it with default settings which seems quite strenuous with 8x aa etc. i usually turn these off any other time as i prefer performance over gfx, but i thought id give it a test. the game ran for a few minutes then crashed and lost signal. i had to reset cmos to get it to post again. after this i checked atitool and the voltage regulator was sky high ~105. loading a game just brings up a scrambled mess of colours and then crashes/loses signal.
next i try the new 500w psu. the regulator temp seems to be sorted at ~65. but loading games still shows the same garbled colours. note on the 400w psu i had some artifacts on the bios start screen and windows loading screen and desktop. but now with the 500w psu they have disappeared.
i tried different drivers omega/cats and even just the driver on its own etc. the funny thing is i can run hl2 in windowed mode and i can play games fine like this even in high res with high gfx, but if i try to load in full screen mode all gfx are messed up.
i was thinking the 400w psu was just underpowering it and has gradually pushed the card over the edge as it has been demanding more power and something has broke. just seems strange i can play games in windowed mode.
anybody had any similar experience or can shed some light on these issues?
thanks in advance
