I've read a few threads comparing these, and most people seem to have gone with the 8800.

But now, the x1950xt is pretty damn cheap (£115), Vs £176 for the 8800.

Is there really £60 difference?

What is the cooling like on the sapphire x1950xt (with the red fan)? the fan seems to be at the wrong end of the card

I would say that is the difference is around that price :)

the 8800's show a big improvement but the thing is if you have an x1950xt i wouldnt bother buying it, if its a choice between the two gte the 8800 for sure.

The cheapest XT i see around is 123 pounds.. and thats at OcUK, where abouts did you find that ? Explain the name of shop in 5 words

And remember, no competitors :)

What card are you upgrading from? If you already own a fairly powerful DX9 card then the next step up would be 8800.

Otherwise I'd go for the X1950XT because there is no DX10 games out yet. 8800GTS is damn fast for DX9 but we don't know what the performance will be like in DX10 games yet so maybe by then you will need a new card anyway. If not you can always get a 8800 later for a lot cheaper.

The cooler on Sapphire is the standard stock cooler and it does the job well, it doesn't matter where the fan is as long as it's sucking the air from within the case and out at the back.

The upgrade will be from a 9800pro.

in my original post, i meant is there really £60 worth of performance difference?

I'm not gonna mention the name (plz dunt ban me) but it's not a small company, should be easy to find.

Get the GTS, totally blows the x1950 away, definately worth the £60 more, GTS is on another level, or if you want to save money till the new cards appear just get the x1950 to tide you over till then, as it will easily do that, then you can get a better/newer card when they appear.

What res are you running at?

Taking the most common (1280x1024), a 640Mb GTS is going to net you anywhere between 5-20 fps more on average than a 256Mb X1950XT.
