Here are two knowledge base article ID's from the ATI website.

Code:
737-21487: System hang while enabling display device in CrossFire mode

The information in this article applies to the following configuration(s):

* CrossFire Edition graphics card

Users of CrossFire Edition graphics card may encounter difficulties attempting to enable more displays when CrossFire mode is on, and may cause the system to hang.

ATI Engineering has been advised of this issue and is investigating. Any updates will be published when they become available.

Code:
737-23450: Radeon® X1950 series: Windows BSOD error message during boot with CrossFire setup.

The information in this article applies to the following configuration(s):

* Radeon® X1950 series
* Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Symptoms:
On some configurations, users might see a "blue system error screen" when booting up a system with two X1950 series cards in crossfire setup.

Install two X1950 series video cards in a system. Attaches crossfire interconnects so that they are in crossfire setup. Connect all necessary power cables and attach the monitor to the primary / master card. Boot up the system, install the video card driver and shut down the system. Unplug the power cable from the slave card and power on the system will result in a "blue system error screen".

Solution:
Currently there is no solution.

I'm experiencing the problems described in both. Catalyst 6.10 allows the system to boot but 737-21487 still occurs.

What options do I have do you think? Do these issues merit an RMA?

make sure both cards work independently - ie both seperately installed in the system (preferably in the slot you propose to use them both in) and also simultaneously in the system but not in crossfire - just to check that both cards are A OK

I would also try a different cat - I thought they were above 6.10 by now but if that is the most recent try 6.9 (i realise you are on W64 and if 6.10 is the first one to support W64 then its still worth seeing if previous cat works even if its unsupported)

I would also suggest (its only a hunch though) that if these Knowledge based noticed were up for any length of time you may struggle with RMA if the cards arent faulty - obviously depending on time of your purchase etc you may be able to exchange but depends on where you bought them how easily it will be and whether they accept non faulty goods back

RMA won't do anything. It's a driver bug.

Perhaps also try non-cable interconnect crossfire, see if that does anything for issue number 2? They way Im reading it, it only affects you if you're utilising the compositing chip and cable (incompatability with X64 Windows?)

Cant do driver master/slave crossfire as far as im aware, has to be 2x slaves, so if he has the master and cable, then i think thats the only way he can do crossfire, driver crossfire is only for 2x slaves i think as said.

Hi there

Both cards work fine when run solo. So yes this is definitely a software issue. I haven't tried anything below cat 6.10 on crossfire mode. 6.11 and 6.12 fail horribly but both work fine when the cards are used individually.

Talk about annoying!

Note that my system boots up a lot quicker with one card now and is generally a lot more responsive. I haven't noticed any slowdown in games but I'm only playing 2142 and supreme commander for now.

Ok I'm in the process of selling on my master card.
This leaves me with one x1950 xtx. As I said before I play supreme commander and bf 2142 without problems. I tried dark messiah though and it totally killed my machine at maximum settings in outdoor areas.

This leads onto my next question.
If you have an x1950 xtx and run games at 2560x1600, and you had enough money to buy any card on ocuk, what would you do?

1) get 8800 series
2) wait for ATI's next generation video card
3) wait for Nvidia's refresh series of video cards

Has to be the 8 series as it is the only option, ATi have not got a next gen card coming till about April, so id forget about ATi and get an 8800 GTX as they have nothing at all to compete with Nvidia, old gen cards can not compete with the new gen. :)

Well, I have a monitor running at 2560x1600 and use x1950 xtx crossfire (master and slave with cable). Runs most games ok, but heavy stuff such as Oblivion, FEAR etc need the detail turned down a bit - so there is plenty of room for improvement.

My current position is to wait for ATi's R600 to be launched and then compare the performance against the G8o in both DX9 and DX10. (Remember, we still don't know how well the G80 will perform in DX10 yet).
If the ATi card is better, I will probably wait for the updated cards to follow before making a purchase. If not, it's going to be the updated G80 cards.

As well as being more powerful, I'm hoping that the ATi cards will be shorter in length than the 8800 cards as I don't have a lot of room with all the water cooling and phase change in my case.

Looks like being a heck of a wait though :(

I'm a little confused how you didn't manage to get Crossfire working in the end, as keeping this setup for the time being would be the best option.

XP 64 bit edition kills it, see the knowledgebase articles at the beginning of this thread.

I'm going to try catalyst 7.1 in crossfire mode when I get home, if it works I'll pull the auctions and generally follow the same upgrade path as you.

I have a licence for both the 32bit and the 64bit versions of XP but the 32bit one is in use on my macbook pro.

I have also preordered vista, I guess I should probably wait and see how crossfire fares on that OS before making any decisions.

Catalyst 7.1 works. I tried supreme commander and bf 2142 and both look good. However no steam games work.

I've never heard the fan speed of my cards run so high either!
