x2 3800 - Lack of power

thats a decent psu i very much doubt its not providing enough juice. what graphics card you got? if its something like crossfired x1900s then maybe. have you got the latest bios on that board?

I'd also be suprised if it was a power problem. if you could check with tcasemax you might find the x2 uses less power than the opty anyway.
I had a similar problem when i swapped my 3000+ venice for an x2 3800. I suddenly started getting random shut downs like you describe. These soon became worse and sometimes it wouldn't boot up either. I tried changing bios etc, then suddenly the board failed. it's off for RMA now. The x2 worked fine in my other socket 939 system.

Try updating the bios. I suspect it could be some kind of mobo issue.

Look at the chipset temp and pwmic temp in that screenshot, that must have been outside because its damn cold. CPu loading at 28C as well, not UK air weather.

I have a 6600GT, I was getting power warnings from it before when I had the Opteron in, they were in Windows not when playing games.

I will check the BIOS. It's just shut down when I went on it when I got back from work, even though its been folding all day!

I updated the BIOS and it seems to be a bit more stabler now at 2.4Ghz, I did try 2.5Ghz but then I got blue screens with a 00000024 stop error related to atapi.sys. I looked at this on the microsoft website but I couldn't see anything relevant.

Do you have any way of measuring the voltages?

Only cpu-z, I have been running at 2.35Ghz with 1.360v (this doesn't fluctuate. I changed to 2.4Ghz with 1.460v this morning and it shut down after about a minute. Temprature is 42 C under load, I think my Opteron was similar - everyone advised me to get a Swiftech kit but I got the Asetek so I could have the LCD display linked to the pump. :(

I might just sell it and get another one.

I forgot to mention there is a missing pin one one of the sides and there was a bit of a chip on the core from the previous owner but it doesn't affect the chip at stock. I have had the IHS reattached by welshtom from these forums, as I was struggling to get a decent contact.

Hmm.
  • It's not achieving the same clocks as the previous owner.
  • It's had the IHS removed and the re-attached since the previous owner.
  • It has a broken pin  possibly since the previous owner's claimed 2.7GHz.
Wonders if maybe:
  • the previous owner's claims are untrue?
  • the previous owner's claims were from before he screwed up removing the IHS and breaking a pin?
  • the current owner should think carefully about whether the missing pin and chipped core might not be more likely to be the cause than the previously good PSU?
