Hi, got my X2 3800+ today and have set it up. I have read a few threads were people have said there cpu idles at 31c. Mine is idling at 43c, is this too high for this chip?

I know nothing about the X2 chips, is overclocking these any different to single core cpus.
The stepping is LDBHE 0601FPMW, is this good for overclocking?

I haven't got windows installed yet as i'm not sure about the temp.

Thanks for any help

hehe sure we're not confusing case with CPU temps? My 3800 idles at 55 and peaks at 57/58. Case temp being 31.

idling at that temp seems high. are you sure the heatsink is seated ok?
Think so, when installing the HSF there was a something on the bottom of the heat sink (grey square) should I have taken this stuff off or kept it on. None of the other hsf i've used have had this, I kept it on.

Don't think so, maybe some peoples I saw were using better coolers, i'm only using the stock HSF.
Mine is now idling at 43 and 47 at load.

that little square (i think) is the thermal pad. you just peel the plastic off and it melts into place filling in the gaps in the CPU IHS.

if you buy your own heatsink like i did, you dont get that stuff on there.

Remove the plastic protector from the fan base that is covering the thermal pad, this is causing your problem, plastic cover is grey, pad is a pinky colour.

Overclocked it to 2.5ghz on stock volts. Can't get it any higher even with 1.4V.
1.4V is the most my mobo will let me put through it. :(

Updated the bios - currently sitting at 25MB/44CPU - little better
Re-seat your heatsink. I have an OCed X2 3800+ running loaded at 39C lol (AS5 with cooler in sig).

As for the original post, those temps are fine. Good luck with it :p

I know this thread is old :( , but its close enough to what i need :D

How the beep do you get these cpus over 2.6ghz? my 1 core can go all the way at 2.7-2.8 but my second core fails within 1-4mins :o

1.54-1.62 Volts , cooling is 45c and lower

I assume your load temps are for 2 cores loaded in something like Prime95???

Theres probably not much you can do settings wise to "balance" up the cores!! 2 things to try if you start getting desperate ......

(1) That old classic reseating the cpu and make sure the heatsink is evenly "loaded" onto the cpu. Also spread evenly some thermal compound of your choice with the straight edge of a piece of plastic ie old credit card.

(2) This is a bit hardcore but you could try and remove the "lid" of the cpu or its IHS as it is known. The IHS may be poorly stuck on meaning thermal contact is good for 1 core and not the other?? Theres a sticky on the top of the forum about how to do this. Its messy and fiddly in terms of removing it and modding the heatsink so it fit the new lower profile "delidded" cpu.

Maybe some1 else knows of a bios setting you can play around with. Oh and by the way I assume you have downloaded the AMD dual core driver / hotfix etc (that might have an effect though I doubt it!).

At the end of the day the cores are not equally balanced and 1 core will usually win over the other.
