looking at these cpu's and the only difference i can see is the cache and a significant price difference. is the extra expense really worth for the extra cache and will the opty go that extra mile on overclocking? i know there is the opty 165 as well but then there is that whole multiplier thing

cheers

At stock an Opteron 170 would perform at about the same level as an X2 4600+ i would think, yet it is cheaper in price than the X2.

The Opterons are great for overclocking, possibly overclock better than the X2 3800+. Combined with the fact that they have 4 times the cache, means they are great performing CPU's, especially when overclocked.

They are superb CPU's but they only have twice the cache of the 3800+

Well, no, running at stock at 2GHz it will run slowly - more slowly than the 4400+ which is the same but at 2.2GHz. Only a fool would run an Opteron 170 at stock on a gaming system.

it depends on your budget.

but if you can ,get the 170, the x2 3800 is a great cpu for the money but the optys clock better have double the cache and dont need as much voltage for high overclocks as the x2's

What sort of temperatures do the Opty 170's kick out, when overclocked..

This is with an Arctic Freezer Pro.

Thanks

It depends on case cooling an ambient temps.

Mine goes no higher than 50 c dual priming depending on room temps etc..

Just edit that slightly, Most opty's clock better (they are not all guaranteed to clock amazingly well) and the 170 at least is virtually twice the price of the X2 3800+.

Yes the opty will be faster but not hugely faster (may hit 2.8ghz compared to the X2's 2.6ghz) which is about 5-10% performance difference for a 90-100% price increase.

Even the bad clocking optys clock better than the x2's and require less voltage.

And the 170 is not twice the price of the x2 3800 either.

x2 3800 is £215 retail and the opty 170 is £317 retail there is £102 between them.

for 100 quid you get a cooler, better clocking cpu and twice the cache.

Don't know about that. The 06 x2's have been holding there own from what I've read, and there seems to be some dud Opterons about also. I just can't justify going the extra for the Opteron.
