X2 4200 big core temps difference

I'm having problems with a X2 4200+ recently bought from OCUK. The core temps are constantly different by 10-12c and core 1 on load shoots up into the 60s. I'm using an Arctic Cooler 64 Pro from my previous 3700+ which was fine, and AS5 (reapplied several times now).

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems and/or any suggestions?

Thanks.

Very similar problem to yours.

My opteron 170 @ stock idles at 32ish, load on Core 0 + idle Core 1 goes to around 38/36 respectively. Yet, when core 1 loads it shoots up to 42/52. Its really strange. Core 0 has virtually no influence on temperature. Ive tried reseating the HSF but no change. I THINK its the contact between the chip and the heat spreader on top, but can't prove that without taking it off (which i might soon).

HSF: ultra-120 extreme strapped with a S-flex 1600rpm
Case: p182 with 5 yate loons in it

I hadn't considered that as a cause, but I've never taken the IHS off before (and with my cooler that doesn't seem to be an option anyway). I'm not happy because the CPU is randomly turning itself off.

May try a new heatsink - can any one recommend one for A8N-E (s939)?

It probably is bad IHS contact on one core. Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do about this apart from remove the IHS and then use a suitable cooler.

If that is the problem, getting a new cooler won't help :(

Am I right in thinking that air cooling is no good for removing an IHS? A risk presumably of not making contact between the chips and heatsink?

Some air coolers will work fine - they just need to be adjustable. Removing the IHS makes the chip "thinner" as it were; so the cooler needs to be adjusted so contact with the cores is still good. Also, sometimes the socket itself can be higher than the cores, so some heatsinks won't fit.

For more info and discussions on which coolers do and don't work, see this thread.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have a look around for a new heatsink and I may have a go at removing the IHS if I'm feeling brave. At least I'll have a 3700 to fall back on if it goes wrong!

Haha true. Although if you follow the guide in that thread I linked you, as well as taking time and care, you should be OK :)

im using the a8n-e and managed to plonk a thermalright ultra-120 extreme on it. Bear in mind though that when installed it points up (to the top of the case), i'll probably remove the IHS soon when i work up the courage, ill post my results here.

my overclocked x2 4200 doesnt vary that much, maybe 4 or 5oc at most.

current core 0 - 28/ core 1 - 23. and thats in my shuttle

heres my results of removing the IHS:

before:
Core 0 idle/Core 1 idle : 33/32
Core 0 load/Core 1 idle : 38/36
Core 0 idle/Core 1 load : 42/52
Core 0 load/Core 1 load : 44/55

after:

Core 0 idle/Core 1 idle : 32/28
Core 0 load/Core 1 idle : 34/29
Core 0 idle/Core 1 load : 37/36
Core 0 load/Core 1 load : 41/39

If my grin was any bigger when i saw those load temps, my head would fall off! :D

I did have a scare when my temps actually got worse! but i found out it was the HSF sitting at an angle (only about 1 or 2 degrees) due to mavity, sorted that with an extra washer on the top skrew.

Hope that helps!

P.S. If you do chop your IHS off, best use a disposable razor blade; works wonders compared to a stanley knife!
