Hi everyone,
I was wondering if someone could please recommend me a cheap (£20 or less preferably) and quiet cpu cooler for an AMD X2 4200+ (socket 939)? And also give a little overclocking advice.
My current set up is
AMD X2 4200+ & stock cooler
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
2x1GB Mushkin DDR PC3200
BFG 8800 GT OC2 512MB
Generic 550W PSU (can't remember the details, but it's pretty stable)
It's a 2 year old pre-built system in which I've replaced the RAM and video card.
I want to get maybe another year out of it before doing a completely new build, so I decided to try to overclock it at the weekend.
I've never attempted this before and am quite paranoid about damaging stuff, so I read the guides on here and found a rather good one specifically for 754/939 A64s here
http://icrontic.com/articles/overclocking_on_754939_platform (someone probably already linked this).
After much fiddling about I came out with
FSB 228
Mult 11x
CPU Clock 2508
HTT Mult 4x
Vcore Automatic (shows at 1.31V in CPU-Z)
VDimm 2.7V
RAM timing 2-3-2-6 with CPC @2T
Mem ratio 1:1
This is stable under 12 hours of P95, 1 hour of Memtest86+ and 6 or so hours of CSS, Crysis and Empire at War. Coretemp has the max load temp going to about 49 degrees.
When I tried to push the FSB further it needed more Vcore, which made the load temps jump into the mid-high 50s (completely bypassing the low 50s). Is that comfortable territory?
I've read on here that people are getting 2600MHz+ on air - would replacing the cooler allow me to get nearer that?
Also, the memory was very unstable at CPC 1T (couldn't get about FSB 210). Is this normal for this motherboard/memory?
And (the more I think about this, the more questions I have) if I do get the FSB up to 240-250, should I use a memory divider i.e. switch it from DDR400 to DDR333 and keep its frequency around the 200MHz mark?
Does overclocking the memory actually have any benefits, especially if I have to relax the timings to achieve it?
Thanks in advance for any help,
