Hi guys I've just installed a new OEM 4200+ (My first) Never done it before so I'm hoping I applyed the thermal paste correctly I'm currently getting a CPU Temp of 35-39c atm I havn't tried any games or anything XP and The mobo detected it fine. Should I worry about anything like these temps my mobo temp is 35 whilst my CPU is also 35 is this normal temps using the stock should I be worried at all?

Thanks JoeBoi

Slightly on the higher side I would say for idle, but I doubt if it's anything to worry about. Depends on case, ventilation and ambient temp. My Opteron 180 (X2 4800+) runs at around 30C idle and 48C under load. Don't imagine a 4200 would be far off.

And then try something like SP004-ORTHOS to check the temp under load.

Do you think I should reapply the Thermal paste as I spent my time spreading it out shall I just take it all off, put a small blob in the middle and then mount the HSF and see what results I get then?

Can't hurt to try. Arctic Silver's WEB site recommends just a blob in the middle. Assuming you are using AS5 of course.

See http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm for a handy installation guide (sorry if you know all this).

My last couple of processors have been retail ones, so I've just fitted them with the pre applied paste and not had a problem. Though some people recommend removing this and applying paste yourself.

How's your case ventilation in general? And is it a fairly warm room? Not a problem we have up here in "sunny" Scotlandshire".

My computer seems to be pumping out cool air atm gets hotter under more load, Ill give it a try I'd rather have a suggestion and be pointed in the right direction then not so thanks, I'm using AS5 so I'll give it a go wish my processor was a retail one hassel! :D

Idle temps mean nothing really :) But 35-39C is absolutely fine. As mikeo said, possibly a little on the high side but nothing to worry about.

It's load temps that count. I would recommend just running Orthos for half an hour and checking load temps before reseating the HSF. There's always the possibility that it won't seat as well as it is at the moment.

that seams high, I have the same CPU and I get those temps when the running at full. i'm currently @ 38dec with SETI running full, when on Idle it's running at mid to high 20's. (i have the energy efficient 65W model, so don't know how much of a difference that would make.)

Just put a small blob in the centre of the IHS/Chip and let the pressure of the HSF spread it

Well its not gonna break it or anything bad like that but there is scope to make it run cooler.

My CPU atm is 28°C Idle - 42°C Load

Toledo™3800+ X2 @ 2700MHz - Themralright XP120 - Sharkoon 120mm 2000 - 1.3000vCore - Full Orthos Load

Have you enabled the power saving/throttle (cool n quiet) in windows, as those temps seem about right for an x2 4200+ when the cnq is disabled in windows.

If you have not enabled it:
Go to control panel, power options, power schemes - minimal power management. You should see a drop in temps if left idle for a long time, the speed of the cpu should drop (to 1000mhz iirc) in system properties too.

I havn't I've installed Vista x64 but I havn't checked the temps what is a good prog to use thats vista comp? I activated cool n quite in the mobo settings do I need to active them in Vista?

more than likely (I haven't used vista) as its to do with power savings :)

You got 3 types of power management Balanced, Power Saver, and High proformance. Does Vista choose when you need more power for your processor at all if you choose the power saver option?
