Hi ...looking to buy a new processor...which would be better buying a FX57 ..or buying a X2 4800 cpu and overclocking to fx60 speeds? also what 2gb memory kit would you advise for overclocking?

Thanks..N

Hi...hmmmmmmm just as my mind was made up *l* so would a 4400 or 4800 clocked at 2.6 ghz offer the same performance as a fx60? never usually lucky when it comes to overclocking, so thats why i was more inclined towards the fx57...but would be happy if i could get a DC to run at 2.6, do you think with this mobo MSI RD480 Neo2 Crossfire ..and ram such as OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC3200 Dual Channel Gold GX XTC Series EL-DDR CAS2 orG.Skill 2GB DDR ZX PC3200 that would be possible?

Appreciate all the comments and help :-)

Ok...going to purchase a opteron 170, whats the best motherboard to match it up with? i've had a dfi nf4 ultra d ..when they first came out and thought it was rather flakey, have they improved since initial release? what about the dfi UT RDX200CF-DR crossfire is that rubbish also? and will the gskill 2gb zx 3200 memory be ok for 2.6ghz.

Well at the moment...i've only got a sapphire x1900 xtx graphics card, creative xfi soundcard, Lg dvd re writer, arctic cooler freezer 64 pro .. and two samsung spin point 80gb hard drives....just sold most of my rig to go for a crossfire setup...so i bought a MSI RD480 Neo2 Crossfire board, but i am returning it for a refund as it's not a very good over clocker and after all the comments about the ati board don't think i'll risk it....this is the spec i thought i would go for.
DFI NF4 ultra d motherboard
AMD Opteron UP 170 Dual Core San Diego 2.0GHz 2MB Cache cpu
G.Skill 2GB DDR ZX PC3200 or G.Skill 2GB DDR HZ PC4000
Sapphire X1900XTX graphics card
Creative X FI soundcard
2x Samsung spinpoint hard drives.
LG dvd re writer
Akasa UV acrylic case (always fancied one of these)
Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Red
Various akasa fans

Thanks for the replies guys.....gutted as i've just sold an Asus A8n sli premium mobo :-( one thing i did notice was the core voltage on the asus board i sold only went upto 1.47v may have been the bios i was using why it only showed up as that.

Hi...ok just about to order a 170 opty, can i ask what is a good stepping? won't be able to test it out until the new Asus A8R32-MVP motherboard is released..going to wait for that as it sounds superb, also changed the memory i had ordered to the OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC4000 Dual Channel Platinum Series EB-DDR CAS3 will that be better, thanks for all the replies.

fingers crossed i will get the same stepping then :-) these cpu's seem too good to be true...how come amd sell the fx60 for so much? surely they must be shooting themselves in the foot...releasing the opterons that clock so well.
I'm planning on buying one of the hiper 580w modular psu's as i'm going for a acrylic case..less leads the better *l*
