Since AMD are slicing their prices severely, I was thinking about getting the best CPU my motherboard can handle. Only problem is, while the 5000+ is the best X2 available, MSI's website doesn't mention whether it's compatible or not. The highest CPU it mentions is the 4800+ and that works.

So, would the 5000+ work on my mobo?

I don't know, but I definitely wouldn't risk spending before you know for certain.

Considered buying a cheaper chip and overclocking?

Your mobo has socket 939, 5000 x2 is for an am2 socket mobo, if u want the chip your going to have to fork out for a am2 mobo and ddr2 ram. Look at 939 x2 cpus prices are well low.
