X2 making high pitched rattling noise

I've just replaced my A64 3500 with an X2 4200. Even since doing this the CPU is making a high pitched kind of rattling sound. It's about as loud as the noise my hard disk makes when reading/writing. It seems to stop when the CPU is under a heavy load.

It is definatly not anything to do with fans, I have stopped all the fans in my system and the noise is still there.

I have tried putting the A64 3500 back in but it now refuses to boot up with the A64 in for some reason, it only boots as far as recognising the processor then freezes, I've tried clearing the CMOS with no joy.

I also installed a 74GB Raptor in a CoolMaster HD cooler, and a Belkin SATA PCI card, I don't think it is any of these, as with the case open the sound definatly appears to be coming from the X2. I cannot test the system without these plugged in because the Raptor is now my C: drive. And the noise only starts starts once windows has loaded.

Any ideas? This noise is driving me crazy!

Any way to make my X2 usage go to 100% to test this?
Why is my comp not booting up when I put the A64 back in?

Thanks
James

Is it deffinately not the fan on the CPU heatsink? I really can't see the cpu itself cauing any noise. Also if the cpu fan is thermally controlled, this could account for the noise dissapearing when under load.

as far as i now there is no parts inside a cpu that can make any noise whatsoever so it must be something else, if your old cpu is not working i would suggest mobo fault

The increased power consumption of the x2 would suggest its either the PSU or more likely a capacitor on the mobo. Deffo not the cpu.

Thanks for all the replies.

It is def not the CPU fan, I can stop the fan with my finger and the noise is still there. I've even unplugged my fan controller to stop all fans and the noise remains.

The sound does not appear to be coming from the PSU, definitely somewhere near the CPU. Could it still be a PSU problem?

My A64 3500+ was working fine when I removed it. I don't understand why it will not boot up with it in anymore?!

The sound is not a mechanical sound, so it could easily be a sound coming from a capacitor, however it didn't make the noise with the A64 3500+. So unless its been damaged while putting the X2 in or it could be due to the increased power consumption?

It is really annoying, I will get to the bottom of it and let you know. Shame I haven't got another mobo to try.

Any more suggestions welcome!

Many Thanks
James

thing is it it were his ram it would have done it with his old cpu (unless the htt clock is different?)

I hadn't yet got round to removing the memory sticks one at a time (i've got 3) to see if it was one of them making the noise, however, the noise seems to have stopped! I had unplugged all my hard drives bar 1 which I had formatted, and went to try and install Vista, but the Vista install wouldn't accept my SATA drivers, so gonna have to try with an IDE drive, I plugged all the drives back in, and the noise had gone!!? It could just be a coincidense, but it's def gone.

Thanks again for all your help guys, will report back if the noise comes bak, but it better not!

James
