Hi

I was wondering if any of you guys might have any answers to the following quesrions :-

1. How long would it take to convert a 2hr dvd to a 1400mb x264 with ac3 ?
2. What is the correct 1:1 resolution to use when converting dvds ?
3. At 1400mb will they look as good as the dvds ?
4. What programs do you recommend ?

Thanks,
Marcus :D

yes it will look as good for a smaller file size, x264 codec compression is very good for size / quality. you'll need a core2 or better to do it in any realistic time. Google is your friend for the apps you need

With my Q6600 (@ 3.2Ghz) it takes 33 minutes to rip a DVD (from the hard drive) into XVID (& AC3) at 75% quality in AutoGK which is about 1.95GB for a 2hour 10minutes film. Can't tell the difference between it and the DVD.

In autogk if you set a size limit rather than a quality limit it has to make 2 passes so therefore takes takes about 80% longer than setting a quality limit.

I say Core2 only as a point of reference, back in the early days of DivX it was taking 3 hours to convert a 2 hour DVD. that was with an Athlon XP mind.

wasn't sure of the rules on mentioning software, Handbrake is good although I run it on a mac :)

2hr dvd to x264 avi/ac3 about 3hours and 4 hours if increased quality using fairuse wizard.
will do it in about 1 hour 15 mins in xvid/ac3 at max quality settings for comparison but if you have the time x264 definately much better quality

btw times based on a 2000mb file size

I get around 40fps first pass and 25-30fps on second pass with my X2 3800+. XVid is much faster than x264 in my experience but the results aren't as good. Encode in anamorphic widescreen (720x576) for best results.

How long does an encode take on your X2 3800+ ?
