X-men 3 box office

Well it looks like x-men 3 has blown everything away with $107 mil in the american box office opening weekend. Highest soo far of any film in 2006 and shows that maybe the box office is not soo down anymore. At one point sales were really low due to high rise in piracy but it seems things are turning around. I dont what it is, I just like to see movies do really well in the opening weekend. It beat da vinci code by 40 mil.

Maybe this means superman returns will have a good opener aswell.

I don't really think piracy affected box office sales much - more a lot of very poor/so-so films that people didn't really want to spend a small fortune to see.
I think it's more a case that there have been some better films recently, with Hollywood realising that they do need to put a bit more effort into them (not just films that are relying on a couple of big names to attract the audience).

X3 would be a suprise if it didn't do well, it's the sequel to two pretty good films, and a part of a fairly massive and popular franchise.

Indeed, coupled with the fact they've had the best competition from TV they've had...well, possibly ever (Lost/24/Sopranos/West Wing/Prison Break etc - huge budgets and well looked after writers).

I dont think whatever success may come this summer will be sustainable though. Too many sequels and spin offs in the pipeline. It may be more cost effective for TV to invest in original drama's and stories should something bomb, but so long as cinema is using it as an excuse to 'play it safe', I fear they're on the back foot.

At the moment all of the big TV series have finished their runs so there's a big gap in the schedules. I was going to watch X3 today, might still go tomorrow though :)

I dont understand this with the x-men films, people rave about the second one, but nothing much happend in it.
Nothing at all happend in the first one.

the down turn in viewings are there ridiculous pricing, £6.40
I've only been 3 times in 2 years to the cinema, all family things, its are boxing day tradition to go watch a film.

£4 is acceptable, £5 I might oush to but £6 is more than pretty much every singfle dvd I own (and I own a lot)... whats the point, I got a 28" tv with surround sound, why spend £6+ to go to a cinema?

as for x-men 3 I might go watch this at the cinema, for one reason, I dont think I can wait till dvd..

Went to see this on Saturday, I'm not sure if I really liked it. It was pretty good but I got a little bored at some bits.

As for Superman Returns how can they not tell it's Clark Kent without glasses!?

The new actor looks remarkebly different whens he dressed as Clark Kent, with the hair anc glasses. Im not saying someone like Louis Lane would be fooled, but everyone else would be. Its just a comic book movie, you have to let those things leave your mind.

Are there any independant/non Odeon etc places near you? I saw X3 at Picturehouse at FACT in Liverpool for, err, £3.50 I believe (student rate discount and it was a mid-day performance). Even without that it's still cheaper than the Odeon. Bigger screen too..

Final numbers are in with $120mil. Incredible. I say it'll rake in another 50-60 mil next weekend and the weekend after, easily claiming $200mil+
