Got this game several months ago. Played it for a week and gave up. I now hear that a ton of patches and mods are out for it, making the thing a little easier for the noobs.

Any chance some kindly X3 veteran could give me some pointers on what I should download, where to find decent noobie guides for the game, and general advice for a first timer?

I was going to put this into the main X3 thread, but thought I might stand a better chance reaching a larger audience with a new thread.

Thanks in advance.

If anyone could post anything it would be good for me also :)

go to the egosoft forums, loads of guides knocking about.

be warned some people take the x series VERY seriously

lol stelly noob with his xtreme processesor ;p

cant believe people cant really figure this game out...seriously about an hour into it and everything becomes very easy....

you can either cap ships at the start for money or you can trade energy etc for the first couple of days before you move onto selling weaps ....

Silicon is best for profit, though you need the mega mahoosive transporter for it.

There's no easy way to put it.. your starting ship sucks. Big time. So sell it and upgrade your hauler/transporter vessel and trade energy crystals and work your way up to other goods.

Buy and use probes. Find (manually) a good supply system of your chosen good, then find a good drop off system. Plop a probe in each system so you have remote access to market for checking prices. This will save literally hours of flying around checking that you can sell what you are about to buy, etc. Nothing more annoying than spending a good 20mins picking up goods, only to find no sucker will pay for them, or worse, find out you just got ripped off.

Once you have ~3mill buy a decent m6 and some guns AND SHIELDS!! and go shooty shooty small time pirates. At first just shoot to kill 10 or so of them, then once your notoriety and standings to Argon are up a bit, when you get them into structure/hull damage stop shooting but keep chasing and keep stripping them of their shield. If they don't scream at your over the comms within a couple minutes, waste them, then try again on a different pirate.

I also recommend doing the first few missions, it will help you get a hang of things!

:)

or you could sorta cheat and look for the hidden ships around the universe and sell there components and then the ships themselves...be warned though in xtreme mode these are not there anymore...

im playing as bankrupt assasin atm everyone apart from the argon and split hate you;p... kinda fun.... been capping the boron im pirate space and the paranid in argon space and been selling the components to start up a large wheat farm. then I got enough for 2 space fuel m factories to create my space fuel complex and selling at 715 credits....never gets above 200 stock ....always sold out.

done that in the split sectors as well and am doing it bordering the boron and paranid to get rep back up again ;p

im currently driving the xenon lx which I capped earlier...cost 3mil to repair though ;-( and that wasnt including shields and weaps.
the lx includes an improved air conditioning system and power steering ;p

As said the best way to start off, and maybe cheating a little. Is to run around and get all the unmaned ships. Which will get you a lot of cash (10 mil'ish iirc). And there are 4 pretty close to the normal starting position.

Hmm in fact think I may reinstall this.. :)

Edit: Ooh and it seems to have a new patch. Fingers crossed they have fixed it more.

yeh I bought this played it all day and didnt get anywhere cos I got confused lol.

Would be cool if someone made a firelfy ship for it tho, infact im gona watch that now :p

Almost as confusing as the game itself! lol. Glad I asked.

Seriously, thanks for the comments... I will be heading over to the Egosoft forums as suggested.

What can I say waited for the patch... I bought it when it came out though... go figure that one out :)

As others have said, get the 2.002 patch which will give you the extra missions, fix many performance issues, and let you play with the M7 class hyperion :D

As for making money: The one thing you should bear in mind is that you should never have money sitting in your account. Whilever you're spending everything you own, your capacity to generate funds will be growing exponentially.

The other thing to remember is that the big bucks are in combat. Capturing and selling ships, and getting weapons. You need a trade fleet and stations to get you cash in the background, but combat will get you the big cash injections you will need to build these things quickly without sitting around twiddling your thumbs or using SETA.

If I were to start the game again my strategy would be this:

Start the game with plot enabled (for rank boosts etc)

Go get the starburst (sitting waiting 50Km directly up from the north gate of Freedom's reach), ditch the Buster and save the cash for now

Go find the two (or more?) 'free' TS ships that are sitting around reasonably close to argon space

Go down to the sector 2 south of Maelstroem, and get the Nova that's sitting there. Use the cash from the Buster to buy HEPTs and 25MW shields

Go kill pirates. Capture falcons (easy enough and ~500K per capture depending on the condition) and buy trade mk3 siftware for the TSs and more shields / weapons for the nova. Start your trade mk3 TSs up as sector traders, then switch them to universe trader when they get to level 8.

Do the plot missions, fairly quickly. You should have enough money from the UTs to cover any required expenses in the plot line
When you're done and the paranid are friends with you again, you should have sufficient race rank to do the bala gi missions

Do the bala gi, and get the Hyperion. Kit it out with PSGs and *go kill some xenon* The drops of gamma PPCs and beta flaks will net you up to 50M per sector you clear, and will give you a good reason to get good with handling a larger ship.

Spend the money you make on more UTs, and factories. I agree that spacefuel and spaceweed are the best startup facs, but once you have more money find the good silicon rocks and churn out quantum tubes, microchips and computer components. Also whatever weapons and shields are needed locally.

I'd continue like this until you have around 30 UTs and 7 or 8 XL factory complexes. By then you will have a massive earning power, and can simply sit back and watch your cash grow in time for the auction. Shouldn't take more than a day - less if you go scavenging for xenon weapon drops to top it off. When the auction is done, you will have a great base to build up a massive fleet and do whatever you want to.

Oh, and regularly jump round all the sectors that border xenon space (except nopilios' memorial) to check for xenon invasions. And never pass up an assasination mission.

Formula for victory right there :)

Got me a Xenon L as well

Nice ship but I still prefer the Nova or the Perseus, I currently have the L on patrol with a few other ships protecting 1 of my spacefuel complexes ;)

guys

I just installed X2 and tried playing the first mission

is it meant to take ages to travel from one part of the sector to the other, and also it doesnt target your mission way points for you... you have to travel to the direction you think its in, and then it might appear on targetting scanner...

well annoying,

The LX is the 'best' of the fighters. It's quite similar in performance to the argon eclipse, but has better shield recharge, faster speed, better steering and more laser energy. I used one of these early on in the game, as I was lucky enough to capture one in fairly good health the second time I fought one.

I prefer the paranid medusa overall though, simply because it can fit PSGs. A pair of b-PSGs on the front will turn a khaak cluster into a complete joke, and also any other m5s you encounter. The PSGs are hugely overpowered in my opinion...
