Hi all,

trying to get my space combat/trading fix and Ive just purchased X3:Terran conflict.

Im hopelessly lost with the game, trying to learn the control method and the shortcut keys to do absolutely anything.

Im also not sold on the very texty interface so far, however Ill will give it some more time as I understand the game has a steep learning curve.

However, I am wondering if I have gone for the right game here and whether or not I should have gone for Freelancer instead, which is currently £5.50 at a certain online retailer.

Anyone played both and have a recommendation as to which is better?

Freelancer was very good at the time, its simple and easy to play. X3 is infinatly better though, just stick with it :)

Yes you chose the right game. :D

X3:tc is a massive game, huge friendly community and tones of mods so you can change the game almost any way you can think.

It might be worth checking out some of the beginners guides over on the egosoft forums. Also feal free to ask any questions no matter how stupid people will respond even if its been asked 1000's of times before.

For most things you can use the menu on the left, but here are some important short cuts to remember.

j - enable seta

t - target object

u - enable auto pilot

shift+d - dock with ship \ station

, and . for sector and universe maps.

c - communicate

shift+c - command menu

X3:Terran conflict has a great fan base with 100s of guides on the official forums.

I love the X3 games and cant wait for the announcement of TNBT in a couple of weeks (new game).

Anyways X3 is the best space sim out atm but its learning curve is hellishly steep. Expect to take a couple of weeks to actually learn to play. It took me 3 tries to actually get into the game first 2 I never had the patience and gave up. But now I have clocked well over 1000 hours of gameplay.

Try to stay away from scripts/mods when you first start playing (apart from the bonus pack) until you get a feel for the game. Some mods make the game a lot harder and overcomplicated (dont get me wrong I love mods and have a few X3TC mods i made myself). But when learning best stay away from them.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I lost 2 months of my life to X3:TC ... it was worth it though and I barely scratched the surface with the game :). All I had accomplished in that time was an average automatic trading route and stations.

I still remember the first time I ventured out of my starting sector only to hear "BEEP!" ... I was quickly shot down in my slow ass transport ship by invading pirates :D

Edit: I found life in the game was a little easier if you start with the trader buy/sell ore and slowly build yourself from there.

I personally find the pirate / steal everything thats not nailed down start quicker and easier :D.

Take your starting fighter head off to the pirate sectors and raid the freighters on the shipping lanes (boron freighters are the best targets as they dont fire back ;))

It also helps if you know where to get a free M3

Depends on whether you are angling more towards combat or trading. For combat, Freespace 2 is still yet to be bettered IMO, but obviously if trading is important then something like X3 is worth sticking with.

With combat rebalanced mod, ship rebalanced mod and missile rebalanced mod combat is awsum in x3tc.

Freelancer was the best space shooter game I ever played, and I havnt tried anything else like it since then. Maybe I should look into this X3 game :)

Freelancer over X3 by a mile. It's simply more accessible. I found X3 very, very slow.

In comparison to Freelancer the only other game that comes close is Descent: Freespace 2. Absolutely awesome game at the time and still plays okay now.
