Love this monitor, but it's nearing 3 years old now and no true successor in sight. Now that I'm complaining, definitely got my monies worth. the x35 doesn't look that revolutionary, same resolution - a VA panel and HDR which is seldom supported by PC games atm.
Yes, I've been stuck looking for a new monitor for a while now because there's no clear option. Every monitor seems to have one or more significant drawbacks and like you say, nothing seems to have moved on significantly for ages!
I've decided VA panels are just not going to cut it. Watched someone playing Far Cry 5 on one of the new ones with supposedly good response-boosting tech - it was a smeary mess to my eyes. The IPS panels look okay by comparison, but of course they have issues of their own.
I am currently debating whether to splash the cash on the updated A34 - the A34P (or possibly the AW3418DW if it weren't so damned expensive). It's a lot of money, though, and all it seems to have different from its three or four year old predecessor is a native 100Hz panel clockable to 120Hz (rather than 60Hz to 100). Not a lot of progress! And so expensive!
I do want to go ultrawide for work productivity and atmospheric open world games, but it's hard to justify the cost when the tech feels so underwhelming for the time.
I'm dithering between just grabbing one for a bit over £800 and hoping for the best, or saving £300 or so and just deciding that the UW tech is not up to snuff yet and I should go for a 16:9 1440p IPS to tide me over - but even there the tech doesn't seem to be offering anything stellar over what was there four or five years ago, with all of the shortcomings that were around back then still being around now.
So, how's your A34 been? Any issues holding the 100Hz overclock for all this time? Gaming been good on it?
