Howdy,

I'm looking for you wonderful people to recommend me ONE X360 fighting game. I say one because I want to be able to just pick it up and give it a whirl every so often as opposed to playing it religiously. I also say one because I don't want to play 'catchup' with the series (i.e. buy the new version every year).

So, OcUK console geeks, what say ye?

Edit: Feel free to include any of the XBLA fighting games, they're perfectly valid suggestions.

id have to say either tekken 6 or dead or alive 4, i liked soul calibur but it just doesnt seem as deep

Facebreaker might be worth considering, haven't played it yet but reminds me of Ready2Rumble from what i've seen :D.

I know you personally play SFIV so what's the reasoning behind recommending SF2HDR?

It's classical street fighter gameplay in its prettiest packaging yet and the best cast. SFIV is very different, requiring you to sit in the corner for a lot of the game.

Avoid HD Remix if you don't want to practice too much then, it's far stricter on timing and execution than Street Fighter IV is.

Tekken is a game where you can mash combos out really easily.

If Alrik can manage all the special moves on HDR then even a 3 year old can.

With SFIV you will also be playing catchup as capcom milk it for all it's worth with constant expansions, while HDR is the definitive (or at least final) iteration of SFII.

As an easy to pick and fun game to play with friends on occasion, I would recommend Soul Calibur 4, plus you make funny personal characters with that.
Also, I think it works pretty well with that Xbox pad.

Street fighter 2 will always be my favourite game but I think it does require some practice. I do like SFIV as well.

while HDR is the definitive (or at least final) iteration of SFII.

Final iteration? I am sure Capcom will find some way to make another version in the future, its just tradition :p

Thing is in terms of Street Fighter II "only", Super Street Fighter II Turbo was the true final one which is what HDR is i.e. contains both the original gameplay and a retuned/remixed version with redrawn graphics. I mean it's been what, since 1994 now so that is a long time. It's only tradtion for what their current fighting game is, which of course is Street Fighter IV.

Other 2D fighters are of course Street Fighter IV (Gameplay wise obviously!), BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger and King of Fighters XII. BlazeBlue isn't even released here yet and by time it does next year, there may already be a console version of it's sequal update, Continuum Shift, so it rules this one out.

As for the 3D fighters avaliable, there is Dead or Alive 4, Virtua Fighter 5, Soul Calibur IV and Tekken 6. No doubt some of these will have a sequal within a few years so it does make it difficult to pick one.

Personally and even though I'm not a huge fan of the series, I'd go for Tekken 6, simply because there is enough characters to last you ages until whenever Namco decides there should be a Tekken 7.

EDIT - Forgot to add Marvel vs Capcom 2 in there for another 2D fighter. This one could also be a consideration as it is the final game in the VS series for the Marvel comics license.

I played the demo for MvC2 and had no clue what was happening. I didn't really get a 'feel' for it though, just played a bit too manically for my liking.

I'll be buying SSF2THDR :)
