So I bought an x4 965 today to replace my AMD 7750 in my M3A78 Pro motherboard. The computer boots to POST, and I can view Bios, but when it gets half way through the windows xp loading bar, it flashes - very quickly - a BSOD and then restarts. It does this over and over.

I tried updating to the latest bios, which i KNOW supports the X4 965 125w variant, but it still does the same thing.

Should I put the X4 in the motherboard and install windows xp from scratch? I can't think what else would be the problem. The motherboard only has once Processor ATX socket, unless I am supposed to get one of those adapters so i can use both my power plugs into it?

What memory are you using, it may be the case of increasing the memory voltage and setting the speed & timings.

I am using:

AK-P060FG8, Akasa 600W PSU.
M3A78 Pro Asus Motherboard.
Corsair Twin2048 6400 RAM

The psu has two 4 pin connectors for the motherboard, but my motherboard only has one 4 pin socket. I presume this isn't the problem because the M3A78 Pro support page over at asus says the motherboard supports the X4 965, and I have updated to the required bios version.

What would I try doing with the ram? I Left everything at Auto and I thought the FSB of an X4 965 was 200, just like my original X2 7750 BE.

I tried to reinstall Windows, which was a right faff, because I still had to swap the CPU back to the 7750. I got a BSOD when it tried to boot into windows setup saying something along the lines of "blah blah blah new hardware etc" and "BAD POOL CALL" or something".

Any suggestions?

Clear the cmos to reset the new bios? Mine had a fewq issues once with a new bios but clearing cmos solved the issue.

Were you overclocking? ensure evrythign is back to default

I just upgraded my CPU and like welshdragon said - clearing the CMOS to reinitialise the BIOS parameters is a very good idea. This will make sure all the settings for the old CPU are flushed out completely.
