Right, over Christmas I'm going to have a play with my 550 BE which I've successfully unlocked to an X4 B50 :)

I've had it running at 3.4 with no problems, I haven't gone further due to not being able to get a read on the temps.
As a workaround I'm going to try each multipler step up with the cores locked and take the temp readings from the CPU as a dual core.
I'd imagine there will be a slight difference in temps between the dual and quad core so I'm allowing about 5 degrees (that seem fair?)
I've read that the X4 955 has a max temp of 62 degrees so when testing my chip as a dual I'll be avoiding anything that runs over 57.

The first step up is an x18 multiplyer which gives 3.6Ghz.
The temps and readings look ok?

When running as a quad its going to generate more heat than as a dual so flicking between the two is a risky strategy imo. The dual starts at 80W (3.1GHZ) and the quad at 125W (@3.2GHZ). 50% heat increase at stock pretty much.

there is a temp reading for your CPU form the motherboard which is not disabled when unlocked. I would find out which one it is (easytune will tell you). Then find correlation between this and your core temp as a dual (when the sensors are working) at idle and load and different speeds so you're confidence what the real difference is. Then apply this when testing your quad for a more realistic reading.

What cooler are you using because there does not look like at 3.6GHZ qnd 54C there is going to be a lot head room.

54c is the correct temp, and if that is an 'idle' temp, its too hot...if its the max temp whilst running Prime, then its ok.

Max temp on this chip is 63c.

Heres my 550 (unlocked) temps:

34c @ idle @3.5ghz @1.45vlts

Thats not unlocked on that screenshot.

HWMONITOR, read TMPIN2 value as your cpu temp. :)

Okay it is the same on my GB board. TMNP2 is the motherboard's CPU temp sensor. This is usually higher than the CPU temperature so if you sort out the correlation you'll have something to go on. I have been using speedfan, easytune will read it too.

At 3.5GHZ; stock volts my TMN2 reads 46 at load which equates to 36 core. I know there is a 10-11C difference at load and only 7 at idle from taking a half dozen readings for my CPU running as a dual at various speeds.

TMPIN 2 is better, its the actual temperatures, the core temperatuers are 10 degrees lower than the real temps. Even with TMPIN 2 i get temps of 30 idle, and 45load.

First person to publish an eight hour Prime95 *Blend* stability test screenshot gets a mince pie! :D

:O

I'll leave it running overnight :D Just did a 15min blend test @ 3.6 to see how the temps looked. Maxed at 62 lol so I think that's it for my overclocking on this chip. Got a choice of 3.6 Quad or a 4Ghz Dual :)

Excellent! :)

I see you are overclocking using just the CPU Multi so I reckon you will get an 8 hour blend shot no problem. Once you work out your CPU max and begin to start tinkering with the Ht Ref. and the CPU-NB MHz etc things get a little more freaky! :p

That's pretty good, can only be happy at that for the price!

Damn if you produce a dual-Core 4GHz stability screenie I will be impressed!

These X2 550's are ridiculously tempting heh!

I'll need to read up on this a bit more before I try anything, I've only ever overclocked 2 chips (Q6600 and this) so I've got a lot to learn ^^

Absolutley :D

I don't suppose you guys know what boards are capable of unlocking these PII 550's and the Athlon X2 5000+??

After the new year, I'm thinking about getting myself either one of those chips (probably the PII tbh) and a board capable of unlocking them, as they are extremely good value for money, and it means I get new toys to play with as well!!

I'd actually prefer it to be a board that supports DDR2 over DDR3, as I have got 4GB of OCZ Gold DDR2 sitting here doing nothing, so I'd like to use that instead of buying more DDR3.

@reiyushin, I'd really like to see a screenie of 8 hours Prime95 with your chip at 4GHz!! :)

I think it's any of the AMD chipsets that feature a SB750 or SB710 southbridge which you should be able to see on the product page . . . . It also may mentioned something about AAC!

Whats the highest CPU MHz you have primed so far? and what was the vCore setting you used on your previous/lesser overclock?

3800 (200x19) I think I used 1.425v, that was about a month ago when I first got this chip.
I tried up to 1.5v to get 4Ghz working.

Just had a fiddle with the CPU MHz ...can't get it to boot if I move it over 200....any ideas?

I tried:
216x18.5
222x18
229x17.5
All at 1.475v

Heading out now so there'll be no more OCing tonight, will check back later :)

Look Familiar?

Haven't tried pushing it further yet, am too busy with Dirt 2 at the moment. Took all of 5 mins to unlock and get 3.6Ghz. Gotta love these cheap quads :)
