hey all,

santas dropping me off a xeon x5650 tomorrow, just wondering whats the general ballpark speeds i should be getting when overclocking it? I currently have an i7 920 D0 stepping stable at 4ghz with 1.36vcore which runs fairly toasty on a h50. hoping to get the xeon past (and hopefully running cooler) that but what should i be aiming for? i've seen people keeping them at 4 and saying its not worth the hassle of pushing it to 4.5, but then other people past 4.5 with ease.

Mine runs at 4.4Ghz with 1.35v (bios) all day long. For me, absolutely not worth the extra volts to run it at 4.5.

Any reason why or just not wanting to use the extra power/temps? On the 920 with my fans at 5v I'm in the mid 50s and at 12v low/mid 40s albeit I had to boost the vcore up to keep it stable with HT enabled at whichpoint the temps went up a fair amount.

If you have the time can you list your BIOS settings for it? just the multiplier/blck and voltages qpi pll etc just so I've got a decent reference point to get started with, cheers mate

x5650 should turn up tomorrow (i say should as royal mail/holiday period is flakey), boards a gigabyte gaex58-ud5 rev1. cheers for the settings fella will give em a browse once it arrives.

yeah turned up yesterday, OC settings from the 920 basically carried over @4GHz and did a few runs of IBT burn test no problem. Gonna push it up a bit today I reckon.

too much vcore needed to get it at 4.4 stable, runs far hotter than expected. Dropped it back to 4.0 for now will try to push it to 4.2 later but I can't for the life of me work out how to get 4.2 and the ram at 1600MHz. The 21x multiplier just resets to 20x regardless of whether turbo is enabled or not.
