Hi guys/girls, Ryzen 3950x PCI Express 8x issue.

The problem is that my graphics card will only operate at 3.0 8x speeds
---

Can you offer a suggestion as how i can fix this, the only expansion cards i have installed are :

PCI EXPRESS slot 1: NVIDIA 1080TI
PCI EXPRESS slot 2: none
PCI EXPRESS slot 3: Sound card AE5
PCI EXPRESS slot 4 *CHIPSET* : none

NVME slots

1: Samsung 256gb NVME
2: Intel NVME cache
3: none

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tryed a few settings in the bios but none make any different that i have tried, can you please tell me why my graphics card cant operate @ 16x
this is also not a windows 10 issue as i have run 100% power plan and tested with GPUZ and also looked on detailed information in my graphics card drivers are link speed MAX is shown as 3.0 8x max instead of 16 so this issue is not a windows os issue.
something else is reducing the link speed...

please help

According to the manual slots 1, 2 and 3 are all connected to the CPU. With the PCIe lanes available from the CPU that means that you'll only get x16 if you only use one of them.

Why don't you have the sound card plugged into slot four? According to the manual that's connected to the chipset and won't be stealing lanes from the other slots.

The PCIe layout on that board really only makes sense for running multiple graphics cards.

Cant use the last PCI express port as my radiator fan is blocking the slot i would have to remove the bottom far left fan to do that, though i have that radiator in pull push config so i think i might remove that fan and put the sound card in that slot. though i hoped i would not have to do that.... :/

as you can see... :/

Shouldn't the Gpu still run at PCIe gen 4.0 X8 though and not 3.0?

pci express 4.0 wont run unless you have a pci express 4.0 gen card..
i only have gen 3 card 1080TI until my MSI trio X 3080 arrives from OCUK... which the way things are going probably next year lol

Do you own a PCIe 4.0 GPU? What model is it?

I do but it will be until OCUK sends my MSI trio X 3080 card though im still waiting lol hopefully this year...

my options are to remove the bottom fan and use the chipset last pci express port for the sound card to get the graphics card to run at 16x or wait for my 3080
cause i dont believe a 3080 will saturate at 4.0 8x then again i dont think the 1080ti would saturate a 3.0 8x so i think i might wait....
i was just wondering from my first question was why i couldn't run at 16x gen 3 i thought it was a motherboard issue or hardware fault but i think the board is fine so i probably will stay this way until my new card comes :)

Cheap pcie ribbon or does the fan block even insertion?

I could try that
im sure the ribbon cable would go in if i removed the fan then inserted it and put the fan back but that would solve the problem and create another where by i wouldnt be able to put the sound card back in to screw to the case as the sound cards express connectionn would hit the motherboard lol

Hate all these PCI-e limitations - one of the reasons why I stuck with X79 as at least there the PCI-e allocation is somewhat as it should be.

As I said above, that board only makes sense for multiple GPUs. And multiple GPUs isn’t really a thing anymore.

My cheapish X570 Elite has all of the CPU lanes to slot one. It’ll always run in x16 even if I filled the other PCIe slots because they’re all connected to the chipset.

To me that’s a much more sensible arrangement, and is something I checked before buying it.

The only expansion cards I ever likely to install are a faster network card and/or a sound card, and it has the slots and available PCIe lanes to accept both.
