Currently have 3 sticks of 2gb 1600mhz DDR3 running in triple channel. It seems to be hitting 100% in a few games and would like an upgrade.

I was thinking maybe I could buy an 8gb dual channel kit, install it along side 2x2gb sticks so I have 2 sets of dual channel giving me 12gb in total (2x2gb and 2x4gb).

Would that work having 2 sets of different ram running in dual or will it be problematic?

In most cases it would work but it can also happen that it gives errors since you do not have the same RAM modules. To reduce the chance of a problem all the specs (brand, MHz, voltage, timing) of the RAM should match the 2GB sticks.

Thats going to be tricky as my ram is old Kingston HyperX and isnt available now.

From what I can see it will be hard to get something identical.

My current Ram is "KHX12800D3K3/6GX"

This is exactly what I have done on my X58a ud3r.
Two 1600mhz 4GB sticks and two 1333mhz 2GB sticks to give me 12GB and It works a treat.

Another quick question regarding the x58 platform, I have an x5660 at stock but will overclock soon and a Gigabyte UD5 rev1.

What sort of speed ram would be compatible, i remember when i built the system the general speed was 1600mhz but now the sticks are a lot faster, is any speed compatible or should I get the 1600mhz to be safe?

My current ram is 1600mhz but I think they run a lot slower due to the stock x5660.

will work fine just put the stick with the highest timing in slot one and your good to go

when i have a 5650(have 5 in total) i could get them all to around 4.4-4.5Ghz but with ram over 1600Mhz i have problems and a lot of time would just not boot.
