Hi All,

Just finished swapping cases with my 2 machines, i've got a Gigabyte X58a-UD3R with i7-920 and 6gb ram powered by a Hiper type r 580w modular psu.

with this psu I can't get it to power up at all, after comparing the connector to the psu in the old case, it's missing the white cable, which I think is -5v, but I though that this wire didn't make a difference, but it seems to.

I put the old 400w psu in the gigabyte board and it powered up fine, put the hiper in the Asus p5q-e and it powered that up.

Does the x58a-ud3r need the white wire, or is there something else amiss?

Would think it is something else amiss - the -5v supply has not been used since ~2003, as it was dropped from the ATX PSU spec at v1.3 (current PSUs are ATX 2.3 or 2.4, your hiper is ATX 2.2)

What gpu are you using? The Hiper Type R 580w is a steaming pile of crap and I am surprised it hasn't exploded yet. It can only deliver a pathetic 360w on the 12v rail where it's needed most. The other 220w is made up on the minor rails.

Well it's got a passive geforce 9500gt in it, it's not used for gaming yet, just connected to tv for watching movies and the odd rc heli sim playing.

I sed the old 450w psu that has the white wire connected and it powered up fine and running stabily. The hiper is in my old 775 system being used as a nas with 8x hdds in it, 4 of which are SAS drives and it's running that fine and has been for last 3 years, I just wanted to change cases over.

Ah well will look like i'll buy a new PSU when I get a new graphics card.

thanks all

Yes as mentioned the Type R really really isnt for a quad core i7.

Please ditch it before you kill a valueable X58 motherboard with it ;)
