So I have an old gigabyte x58a-ud3r v2.0, running Intel i7 2.8ghz over clocked to 4.0ghz.

Currently has Kingston 3x2gb 1600mhz ram in triple channel configuration, looking to upgrade but not found any conclusive information or if it can take modern DDR3 ram, as the current ram is discontinued.

I've been looking at Kingston savage 2x8gb 1600mhz DDR3 but not entirely sure if it will take 8gb modules.

Has anyone had any success installing 8gb modules on this board? Ideally like to run either 2x8, 4x8, 4x4 in duel channel mode.

Cheers in advance.

Yes your board will take 8gb sticks. ir will also work fine with dual channel.
I would stick with 1600Mhz.

I had a ud5 and ran 8x8gb

If you looking for a performance ungraded i would get an x5650 cpu, going from 6gb to 16gb of ram will make not really difference in feel. i can run game fine with 4gb of ram.

You ran 8 modules? Thought the UD5 only had 6 slots?

Performance is not the issue really it processes games fine, it's just struggling in fallout 4 with stuttering, apparently a common problem with systems under 8gb ram.

OK update, i bought 2x8gb hyperx savage 1600mhz modules and they work no bother, this board can take 8gb modules, next step another 16gb to see if i can break the limit of 24gb to 32gb :D

Your limit will probably be CPU as the memory controller is on the i7. Most 1366 i7's are limited to 24gb so best to check with intel's site.
