Hello Overclockers :)

I am planning to build a desktop for my boss which will most likely be the x6 AMD Phenom on an ASUS board with 4gb of ram and a Hybrid drive. We currently use Windows Server 2003 so all machines are XP Pro 32bit. Vista is not an option and of course Windows 7 Pro 64bit will not work/ join 2003. So for now, the new system will be using Windows XP 32bit, i'm not overally keen to try the 64bit version to make better use of the ram at this stage.

So the question is; will Windows XP Pro support the use of the x6 well enough until our company takes the plunge and implements Windows Server 2011? (the workstation will be updated to Windows 7 Pro 64bit at that point)

I understand that not all applications support x6 at the moment, this isn't really so much of an issue as they may or will once we have a newer Server OS implemented, its more a compatability issue I'm thinking of. I can see the ASUS board has support for XP drivers so it does look very possible.

Has anyone tried this combo and did every program/ app work as supposed to?

Another option was an x4 i5, but thought the x6 would hold a bit more power for the future.

Any help/ feedback greatly Appreciated :)

w7 64bit will connect to xp / 2003 shares? dont know about joining the domain but as long as the username / password match it will work, unless someone knows otherwise.

also don't cobble together a PC for the boss it will likley bite you in the ass later...

All the Windows 7 machines I have set up for clients are connected to 2003 domains.

Maybe get your facts in order before making decisions, OP? :p

why not XP 64-bit? waste of time having the ram else...
Also Win7 is 10x better than XP, and will join 2003 domains etc. so I really, honestly can't understand why you would even consider a new build without Win 7 UNLESS there is a compatability which cannot be resolved....and I have not come across one yet!

I guess at this point I should mention 2003 SBS R2, my bad. Is it still possible?
From what I read it wasn't. I know you can have VM's of XP Pro but i'd rather not go down that road.

Thanks for all your help :)

SBS 2003 is still largely the same as Server 2003. In terms of connectivity and AD, a lot of it is identical. No reason at all to assume it would make any difference.

Besides, vanilla SBS 2003 will happily have Windows 7 machine in its domain. Be crazy to think R2 wouldn't.

Thanks for the info guys, when I did search google the pages/ posts I looked at suggested it wasn't possible which I must admit I found odd as Vista could be part of a 2003 domain. Thanks for clearing it up for me, greatly appreciated.
