x64 guest vm on 32bit host?

I was fully under the impression that this was not possible. I don't know if things have changed but I now read articles like this:

and also see that virtualbox can allow this too (v2.1 onwards).

What's the crack?

The crack is you can run 64-bit OS on a 32-bit host. :/

So long as you have VTT, the VM should be directly addressing the CPU, so it matters not what the host OS is.

Without looking into any real depth, my thoughts would be that VB and VMWare Workstation are Type 2 hypervisors so they provide their own emulation layer meaning it doesn't matter what the underlying OS is.

One would hope that if a guest OS is in any way critical they would be running it on suitable hardware and host OS :/
