Bit of a commemorative post really, in aid of Windows Pro X64. Its been my valiant steed for more years than I'd like to count now, bought right here (against the advice of forum members) on OcUK - and its been bloody fantastic.

Few hiccups (for about the first hour whilst swallowing the price of Norton pro (the only retail x64 av at the time) - before discovering Avast :D ) but since then, a truly brilliant product. Well worth the 90 odd quid it cost for the oem copy.

So I'd just like to say, thanks for being wrong. : )

Just finishing my backups and then its time for 7 pro 64. ^_^

cheers

I can only say congratulations for sticking with it, I tried Windows 64bit and at the time there was absolutely no drivers for it and no applications worked for it so it was all of day before I went back to XP 32bit.

I still think to this date there isn't a massive deal of drivers out there for a now rather outdated operating system. There seemed to be more drivers out for Vista 64, even thought XP 64 was out a long time before, I may be wrong, just seems that only a few companies bothered to produce the right drivers for it.

I still have an XP64bit partition, I use it for older games that have sound issues with my XFI in Windows 7

There were various enthusiasts sites with drivers, just needed a bit more googling than 32bit, though granted there was a significant lack of hardware support (Printers mostly) and for my Creative 24bit card at the time, but neither bothered me personally. I've always been of the opinion that printers should be used industrially (or in schools) - most cheapo ones die within 18 months and cause more grief than they're worth.

All of my components worked fine, '32+32' indeed. Few ancient games had issues Myst etc, but to be honest its just been a really fantastic stable base for a number of years now (Since the Athlon 3500 Clawhammer chip came out, whenever that was), most evidently from the extra 800mb of ram available :D

I never understood the hatred towards Windows XP x64, I ran it for a couple of years before being forced by Microsoft to move to Vista. Apart from a slight delay in getting drivers for my SATA RAID card, I had no issues with support for my hardware. In fact, I still have a Windows XP x64 partition on my gaming PC dedicated to the few games I can't get to run on Windows 7. Had Microsoft not abandoned support for it in some of their software, I'd probably still be running XP x64.

Wasn't XP a "false" 64bit O/S? With the only true 64bit O/S from Windows, being Vista?

No. Windows XP x64 was not a fake in any way. It was a bloody bloody good operating system. I used it for 2 years and it never let me down once.

I looked for a retail version of x64 when I finally moved to AMD64 system, but it was only ever released as OEM. So stayed with Windows XP Home.
