As the title suggest which should i really go for? bear in mind i won't be overclocking as i have never done it before , looking for best performace etc

You could get a e6600 and then learn to overclock, its not as hard as it seems, you just have to do it one step at a time and stop when you are not confortable going anyfurther. Otherwise get the E6700.

However if you have the money then get the x6700 as its quad core and no amount of overclocking a 6600 will make up for 2 extra cores.

i got a e6700 and overclocking it to 3.2 on my aw9dmax took me about 10 seconds :D just typed in 320mhz for fsb and booted up that was it lol. so easy should have been illegal

Lol get an e6300 or a e6400 and save yourself £500!!! :)

secounded, I've said this a million times now but what the heck, I've had the X6800 and sold it to help pay for QX6700, I brought a E6300 to tied me over (as the QX6700 was'nt out at the time), I was so impresed with it overclocked I have decided to stick with it until cheaper quads come out,

I suggest you build up your system with the E6300, even at stock compared to my X6800 in game I could hardly see the difference, anyhow, the E6300 is only £115, see how your system runs, I'm sure you'll be impressed, if you are, you've saved your self a cool £500-600, if on the off chance your not happy with it, sell it for £90-£100, trust me, it will sell straight away where ever you choose to sell it, then buy the cpu you originaly wanted only losing £20-£30, which is no biggie when your talking about building a couple of grands worth of computer setup.

I say go for the quad core. The cheaper quad core chips wont have the unlocked multiplier like the extreme edition does. Multi core is the way forward. Dual core will soon be left in the dust once developers being multi threading their software. Games that will be multi threaded next year:

Crysis
Half Life 2:Episode 2
Alan Wake
UT2007

I got the QX6700 and couldnt be happier. Cant wait to see its full potential in games next year.

I'd agree with lowrider. Unless you really need the quadcore performance now, get the 6300 to tide you over until multi-threading in games becomes more than just an aspiration.

The fact that hardly anything uses dual core should say something though.
