Hey guys, I'm thinking of going x79. Needing help on choosing a motherboard. Will be oc'ing down the line. I take it 8 ram slots are better down the line? I won't be doing anything too heavy, little encoding here and there.

I would stick with the Asus range, P9X79 et al.

Ill echo this, running a P9X79-LE and never had any issue with it, great board and the pro/deluxe/ws have even more features as do the sabertooth and rampage.

Before getting the ASUS I originally bought an EVGA X79 Sli and would recommend against them as EVGA had had major issues with their X79 boards, when I got mine they were on bios version 40 and the official forums were awash with people complaining of stability issues and zero day problems that had not been addressed.

Also Gigabyte had design problems with their UD3/5 series X79 boards where they would blow the VRM's during overclocking, this was "fixed" by a BIOS update that sorta crippled overclocking to stop it happening, but their new boards are reportedly issue free :)

Either ASUS ROG or P9X79 Range. In X79 ASUS is undoubtedly the way to go. The Bios is far more mature than any competitor and boards are more stable. Giga are much improved but ASUS still have the lead on X79.

Awesome cheers guys. Thought about waiting for Haswell, but a 6 core should future proof me enough. Plus by the looks of it, these socket 2011 cpus are beasts!

Actually this might seem as a massive lol to some, but I'm gonna go down the amd route. I have a big soft spot for amd.

You would need to have to consider them ;)

Haha, yeah i know, the 3930 is just overkill for what i need, but would be happy with the 6 cores. Plus it'll be old news soon enough. the 3770k - while great and while i cant see quad core being fazed out within the next 6 years, i'd be a annoyed that it'll be old news come Haswell. Least the bonus of amd is steamroller is still on AM3. I only have a soft spot for amd because i used to build my first...5-6 pc's with amd processors. The terrible Phemon 1 made me change to intel on my next build. I had the i5 760 for about a month then SB came out, i later sold my pc and built an 2500k, then a month later IB came out haha. So i dont really wanna buy Intel right now, least with the 3930 its 6 cores. peace of mind i guess.

I'm not buying till April anyway. thats when i sell my laptop. So i'm still on the fence.

EDIT: nevermind, i see ivy-e is on the cards(8pack said on another thread haha) Looks like its back to x79, maybe quad core for now then 6 core later on.

Go for a 3930K and the Sabertooth X79, lovely combo :-D that's what I'm buying as soon as I've got the money saved up. Its as future proof as you can get I suppose...

With technology there's always something better around the corner so you'll be sat waiting forever, I'd only ever wait it out once a release date was confirmed and it was within a few months.

Rampage IV Extreme + 3930k, one board to rule them all.
