So as the title suggests my motherboard is slowly moving towards the light at the end of the tunnel, a dodgy psu i think was the cause but i am slowly having usb ports start to malfunction and a good 30 second delay between bios and booting which doesn't make sense.

its a Gigabyte x79 UP4 rev 1 with the latest bios fw and a 3820 sitting in it with 16Gb of samsung green ram. Im deciding to take action now as i cant afford having it die on me in the near future.

So my options are to buy a new x79 board of which there are few choices due to discontinuations

or upgrade to a new platform

any advice ;) ?

I'd stick with X79 given the cost of moving to X99 and the lack of real benefits over what you have with X79.

I was deciding on an upgrade not too long ago and decided to stick with X79 rather than fork out for new MB/CPU/RAM to move to X99 especially given the RAM prices.

yeah that's what i'm leaning towards, wait for ddr4 to mature and there to be any actual advances in cpu's ( a hopeful dream).

Seems the main choice is the Asus unless its worth another £80 for a sabertooth board ?

Similar situation here. Same mono but I wrecked one of the PCIE slots through my own stupidity. Oops.

Don't think the Sabertooth is worth the extra unless you need the extra couple of SATA ports and the internal USB3 header.

Not sure if one has more bios options than the other but as long as it does what you need at the moment I would go for the cheaper board as you are probably not going to be upgrading on the same platform.

Use the compare option on the compare system on the Asus site before choosing, there are other MB's about but they are thin on the ground.

Thanks for the advice so far, unfortunately i have 4 ssd's in my system at the moment which is fine for the 6 sata 6GB connections on my current gigabyte but now is causing me problems, no idea why newer boards have less ports :(

seems the motherboard will put me back £260 a fair bit considering my original was £160 nearly 3 years ago. Both the sabretooth and the deluxe are at the £260 and so i'm wondering if its better value to spend an extra £100 get a new cpu from the 1150 range and wait till something new comes along?

the problem with the p9x79 is it has only 2 6gb sata ports which is pretty bad value in my opinion otherwise i would jump on the idea of having to spend less money.

Cant RMA as its coming up to its 3rd birthday in a few days and this board had only a years warranty unlike gigabytes newer ones.

Enough space to add a SATA3 expansion card to give you the extra ports you need, much cheaper option ?

If it's a standby then I'd be looking second hand as it's a lot to spend "in case" the other board packs in. I'd also try checking all of the bios settings in case there something sneaky that's causing the delay on boot, resetting the bios (battery out) and then a fresh bios flash just to make sure.

Ive decided to go for the p9x79 and buy a startech 2 port sata 6gb card for the extra sata ports as advised. Just a shame i have to buy elsewhere due to lack of stock by ocuk :(

Thanks for the heads up Mr.May, went for the B grade UD3, came today and seems to be only missing the back plate but is otherwise in a good condition. Pretty sure my UP4 back plate will be compatible to solve this though.
