I was just wondering if anyone knows the Registry hack you need to do in order to get the PCI-e slots running at 3.0?

I'm just wondering if it helps any (assuming when Gen3 is enabled in my BIOS the monitors actually come out of standby...)

I know there's an exe but I'd prefer to do it manually so I know what to undo if it doesn't work and actually causes problems.

Also I seen reports of some people having issues with games complaining about Direct3D components, if I got this would dropping down to PCI-e 2.0 i nthe BIOS solve it or would I need to undo the registry change?

The exe is the only safe way to get PCI-E 3.0 speeds. That link also gives you instructions on how to undo the changes if you do get problems:

If you would like to revert back to 5GT/s bus speeds you can do so by running the following command from the DOS command line: “force-enable-gen3.exe –revert”

Yeah, apparently the undo function doesn't always work though.

Hence why I wanted to know the manual way of doing it (as apparently the exe only does the reg hack anyway) so I can undo everything I did, instead of hoping -revert works and being left with an even bigger mess of a system than I have now if it doesn't.
 
This is the method Nvidia have recommended so you're likely to mess up something editing your reg manually than using the executable. Anyway, it works fine on my R4E so I don't see the what the problem is...

If it works on one R4E, it'll work on all of them. The problem lies in how different manufacturers may have implemented PCIe 3.0 differently on their boards. So the fix working on the ASUS board might not necessarily mean it works on a Gigabyte board but it'll work for all those ASUS boards.

latest bios installed,nvidia exe used no issues
the revert also worked for me
back using exe with no probs
its not ideal using the exe but it works for me
 
Does that mean your R4E also sometimes boots but doesn't display anything and the monitors don't even come out of standby? Unless you set the PCI-e slots to Gen2.

(Tried this with 3 different graphics cards by the way, so doubt it's them)

EDIT: Just trying to establish if all R4E's behave the same.
 
Why would you need to do this on R4E & SB-E anyway? Doesn't it work as PCI-E 3.0 out of the box?

GPU-Z reports both my 690s as running at PCI-E 3.0... is that not right?

Only 690's work out of the box
Nvidia withdrew native support for 670/680's without the use of a exe they issued to use a your own risk

The value of PCI-E 3.0 at the moment is questionable. 1 gtx 690 running PCI-E 3.0 does not outperform 2 GTX 680s in sli running PCI-E 2.0 when all 3 cards are using the same clocks.
 
pcie 3.0 shows massive improvements when using 3 or 4 cards, considering most people commenting who have bought X79 bought it specifically because it has more PCIE channels allowing 3 way and 4 way SLI, this is a significant issue, whether or not they are currently using it, being locked out of a feature that was heavily advertised in quite an annoyance

even in 2 way SLI it does make a few % difference so if I've paid £100+ more for a setup I want those few % regardless of any other issue
particularly when you start comparing x8 pcie 2.0 with x16 pcie3.0

that AMD support this and nvidia have just shrugged their shoulders of the whole thing is incredibly poor

Asus reps have said that it's a problem with the SB-E CPU's themselves so AMD aren't necessairly in the clear, Intel have even listed an errata relating to it for SB-E.

It could just be that this problem is so tiny that 95% of people are unaffected... but if those 5% have AMD cards chances are they might suffer stability problems given that AMD have not followed the same path as NVidia (putting stability first). I bet AMD have not even conducted any testing with regards to this.

support also means fielding questions from people that have problems, not just saying well we think a small percentage of users MAY have this issue so we're going to cut off support to everyone

I have 2 EVGA 670's and I am annoyed at Nvidia for copping out

I would prefer a default to on position with clear support pages for how to turn it off (like an option in the driver menus), rather than a reg hack exe that even of itself seems to sometimes not run right, or even a default to off for stability but again with an easy nvdia menu option (even if it has in big red letters "DON'T BLAME US IF THIS CAUSES PROBLEMS" next to it)

I've also not seen loads of forum posts of people saying 7970 on X79 is unstable and that they've fixed it by turning off pcie 3.0 or even that AMD have suggested this

Quad Sli using PCIe-1.0 PCIe-2.0 and PCIe-3.0

The above runs were done running the cards @stock speeds with the cpu @4.0ghz all settings in Heaven 3.0 maxed out @2560x1600.

The min and average frames on PCIe-1.0 are a bit lower than PCIe-2.0 or 3.0
There is not much difference between PCIe-2.0 and 3.0
PCIe-3.0 is the winner but only by a very tiny margin.
