X79 vs Z77

i already have ssd...graphics that are perfectly good....i am getting a good price back for my board and chip....so will probably cost me about £150....to migrate...

then the option is yours, if the money isn't an issue, then get the X79 as im sure if you really don't like it you will get enough back to get a Z77, whereas the option wouldn't be there the other way around.

at the end of the day its your money so its which you think will benefit you most. if money is no object, then get the X79 and accept you might lose a few FPS in games but gain some time rendering images.

Just I wasnt aware that IB didnt have 6 core processors. I dont want too lose 2 of them :D

lol lose? will anything you have use all 6 cores? no point having something that does nothing.

the choice is yours. in my opinion it seems like a lot of more for very little 'general every day user' gains.

People seem to be confusing 'faster/better' with 'cheaper'.

X79 is faster/more powerful but it is also a lot more expensive than z77 both for the mainboard and CPU. Most mainstream users are unlikely to benefit from the features of X79 so in that respect the z77 would perhaps be the wiser choice where the money saved could be utilised elsewhere in your system say an SSD or additional GPU.

X79 = Nuclear Bomb
z77 = Hand grenade

Ok, it's a lot closer than that but you get the picture. Do you need a Nuclear bomb or will a hand grenade suffice?

wow thats a good way to put it....see i cant find any prices on the z77 yet and loads of people seem to already have one.....webbo is the 3820 ok or does it have to be the 3930k?

prices are similar aren't they ?

a decent X79 mobo (say Asus Deluxe one) is 195 ish - vs say at a gues 150 for a mid-range Z77 board when they are out ?

but 3820 is likely to be cheaper processor than the 3770k ? I've seen the 3820 for under £210 - its unlikely the 3770k would be less ? I'm guessing more like £250 ?

therefore nothing in it ?

X79 is more futureproof

With regards to the X79 platform I think there are a lot of people overestimating their needs. I've come across a few people who bought a 3930K and mobo because they "need" it. The reality of it is that they play games on a PC and occasionally do something that might make the cpu work the 4/8/12 threads.

For most people out there a Z77 and 25/26/2700K is more than capable enough, use the cash difference on a better / larger hdd, gfx, or heck, even save some money...

see above - I'm not sure the X79 is anymore expensive as the 3820 can be found much cheaper than the 2600/2700k and probably much cheaper than the new Ivys

I'm 50:50 between 3820 +X79 and Z77+Ivy

Hi everyone.
New to the forum question! What would be the max safe temp for i7 3960x ? At mo its overclocked to 4 ghz
Rendering in max and maya
Temp on max load 60c thats with a coolmaster air heat sink
Not sure if a water cooled sys would be better ????

Thanx in advance

Asus mb x 79 pro
32 gig rip..........
Intel 240 g ssd
Intel i7 3960x
Amd firepro v7900

Or just wait and get IB-E :D

So what advantages apart from cost and ease of overclocking does a z77 have over x79...

a Z77 has no advantage over an X79 (except maybe lucid virtu mvp, not sure if all the X79 support it). its just 99% of people wont use the extras the X79 has so its not worth spending the extra.
Overclocking wise 1155 seems to be a bit better than 2011, but then this is dependant on the cpu, so nothing is guarnateed.

91C is the maximum although you'd want to stay under 80C really because don't forget it will be a lot warmer when summer comes.

A watercooled system should be better if you're planning to overclock much higher but 60C is absolutely fine.
