x8 sas card?

I have the LSI SAS 9201-16i HBA version of that LSI controller and it needs 8 lanes at a minimum. Putting it in an x8 slot only capable of x4 and the stability and performance is badly throttled. But in an actual x8 or x16 slot (full x16 or x8 in x16) it works fine. I can't imagine x16 to x1 across USB would work very well.

Probably won't work, as most SAS cards require 8x bandwidth (rather than 1x bandwidth but with a physical 16x slot that those adapters would give)

ok guys thanks for the info
Not a problem I got this card for future upgrade but was gonna plug it into my existing htpc in the interim

:)Been thinking about this.My intent was to upgrade my pc around aug and use my current mobo a gigabyte ga-z87-d3hp in my htpc along with the above sas card
But looking at specs my mobo has 2 x16 slots but the second runs @ x4 I think

Not needing speed just most hdds I can get for storage and to watch the files/isos stored on them

any thoughts on this option?if not can you point me at some mobos that would be suitable please :)

if youre not worried about speed then for the cost of one of those cards you can pick up a gen8 microserver. Two, infact, as they are about £120 after cashback. You'd be limited by Ethernet but on the plus side you don't need a new motherboard and it keeps all of those extra drives out of your main rig.

just an option :)

Ahh just got a gen 8 earlier this month.Picked up a brand new lsi card off the forums on an impulse really for my htpc without really thinking it through
