might be grabbing a leadtek 7800GT, was supposed to be getting an X1800XL for £160 from an OCUK member but the guy turned out to be either fraudulant or just a plane idiot. (and notice after e-mails to 7 mods, ive had no reply...)

so it looks like im going for the GT as my budgets about £160. now the reason im upgrading is because im after SM3.0 + HDR, (im a half life 2 nut and no HDR is bugging me, plus i notice a lot of games are comming out which use sm3.0 now and although they will work with 2.0b, im missing out on certain details) and i guess i get the added bonus of going for SLI in say 6 months when i will need the extra power. but i wondered what your thoughts on the extra performance would be?

also do you think its worth buying a GT now? or should i wait till the 7900 comes out and see if the GT prices drop to save myself some money???

my current GTO2 (first batch, not the later crappy revisions) scores 6250 3D05 marks when clocked at its max of 540gpu 580 mem (up from 400 / 490) based on "that there auction site" i can probably get £110 to £130 so the outlay would be small...

Expect an average of about 15% increase in performance, with high res (say above 1600x1200) & with AA / AF giving a performance increase of about 30%. It will vary from game to game though.

Personally i dont think the 7800GT/X prices will come down when the 7900 series cards are released for the following reasons. Gibbo has made comments along those lines. The prices of their topend cards are vey high now & its likely that the 7900 series will be of a similar price (with the 7800GTX 512MB being discontinued), thus the 7800GTX & 7800GT prices will have no reason to be shifted.

thanks for that ACESHIGH, just a quick note though, my maximum res is 1280X1024, 19" LCD here. but hey at least i will have plenty of power for the next 6 to 9 months :)

I don't get why you want the 7800gt for HL2, the x800gto does full HDR in HL2. SM3 is another matter but maybe you should wait a little longer until you can make a slightly bigger jump. The 7800gt isn't very much better than the x800gto in terms of raw speed, at 1280x1024 you'l notice fudge all difference.

I'd say this isn't a good upgrade, too much expense for too little gain.
