What kind of a performance increase am I looking at, going from a X800pro (P4 2800) to 8800GTS (E6300)?

err, quite a big one! Games, probably 5 times the frame rates. Hard to be accurate though. It is a bit like saying what time would I get in the London marathon if I swapped my trainers for a porsche!

i always wonder if these type of questions are serious. i mean your on a pc enthusiasts site, so im assuming you know that the hardware your talking about is top of the range.

general common sense would indicate that you would gain a massive increase in performance, i sometimes get the impresion that people are just bragging about what they are going to get.

its like when someone ask's if this spec would make a good pc and its all top of the range parts! honestly do you not know the answer?
