X800XL Driver problems

I've just started using my old Gigabyte silentpipe X800XL (AGP) in a mates old rig. Removed all drivers for the machine before adding the cat 6.11 ones. All was well for a week (mostly running games) until, having done nothing more than turn the machine on, I hit a problem.

Now, with any ATI drivers installed, the machines freezes or reboots when the Windows XP load screen closes prior to lauching Windows. I had to enter Safe Mode, un-install all ATI drivers before getting back into Windows proper.

Any attempt to install display drivers (either various Cat versions of the ATI site or from the setup CD that came with the card, both as part of the CCC version and display drivers only) only results in the same problem after the restart. The only way I can get XP to launch is to allow the machine to load (through 'last known working settings') is without any display drivers installed, having uninstalled them with ATI Uninstall Tool.

I've tried installing .net framework v2 as this appeared in one error message on driver install, but this was to no avail.

Is it that, for whatever reason, I haven't managed to uninstall previous drivers correctly / fully, or is the a more sinister reason to these problems?

I'm afraid I'm not sure of the mobo make or model but do know it's a 2.66 p4 with 512 (SD?) ram running as stock.

Any suggestion welcome as this is driving me spare :(
