X800XL memory heatsinks

Just got an X800XL AGP (from the MM in fact), to replace my tired 9800Pro. My 9800Pro was watercooled by a Maze4 GPU block, which I intend to use for the X800XL. Problem is, the memory heatsinks I ordered haven't arrived yet :(.

My question is does anyone know / has tried running this card with no memory cooling (at stock speeds)? Basically, I'm impatient and want to try it out today by simply swapping out my existing card.

I quick google reveals a few models of the X800XL where the stock heatsink doesn't touch the memory. Has anyone tried it, though?

My x850xt with ddr3 doesn't seem to have ram that runs hot. That was quite unlike my old 9800pro (ddr1) whose ram sometimes felt burning hot to the touch!

The original heatsink on the x850 was attatched to the ram and when i replaced it with an arctic cooling silencer 5 the ram was given a whole aluminium plate to cool it! However, it never feels any more than warm to the touch!

I think you'll be fine but better wait for someone else's comments just in case! ;)

I don't think it matters in the least, the Ram on graphics cards tends not to get particularly hot unless you are seriously overclocking them. Memory heatsinks tend to be a bit of a gimmick as a general rule on graphics cards but that said I don't have an X800XL (I've got a 6800GT which has some memory chips that don't fully touch the Arctic Cooler) so it is possible, if unlikely, that it will be different. :)

Thanks for the replies.

Sadly work is calling atm :(. Think I will try it out later this evening, with the GPU watercooled and the memory without cooling. I'll run at stock until my memory coolers arrive - just to be safe :D

EDIT: All working! The memory gets pretty hot when running taxing 3D stuff, but probably not dangerously so (I guess about 50-60 C). Will feel better when it's got better cooling! Thanks for the advice :)
