when playing pretty much any games the fan constantly revs up every 2 mins or so and stays that way for a minute or two before going back down to its usual speed and silence.
Particular games it will stay reved up continuously which is quite anoying as its pretty loud.

I never used to have this problem, so im not exactly sure what to do, was wondering about getting an artic cooler to see if that stops it. Any help would be greatly appreciated by myself and my ears. ;)

dust is clogging the fins on the card, to solve this problem on my x1900, i took the card out and blew very hard on the exhaust of the cooler so all the dust flew out the air intake.

Get hold of ATI Tray Tools or ATITool (they are free) and you can use this to adjust the fan speeds and load a profile at start up

The default for these cards is something really stupid like 14% fan speed all the way to 96c and then 100%. I guess that the fan is at 14% and the gpu is getting hotter and hotter, it hits 96c and the fan goes at 100%, then gpu cools, fan down to 14% and the cycle starts again.

In the programs above you can set 7 or 8 fan speed/temperature thresholds

Mine is set to 45% @ 60c and it never gets hotter than that even when overclocking to 530/680. (I have a range of combinations before 45%/60c to govern less demanding tasks)

I swapped my fan for an Arctic Cooler, cos was fed up with the noise of the stock fan. I was well pleased - it's less noisy and when you run it @ 100% it's still not very noisy - best bit is I never have to run @ 100%!
