Hi guys
My AGP setup looks to be going. I have a 6800GT at the mo, but need a new motherboard so might as well upgrade.
I can get this card:
ATI Radeon X850 XT DDR3 256MB PCIE

pretty cheaply from someone - how does it compare performance-wise to my AGP 6800GT? About the same, or if better then by how much?

Thanks a lot :)

It's a better card, but not by much. When i was looking around at these cards a while back, i found it just depended on what games you played. But from my experience, it's a faster card for general use

Thanks for that :)
Have you got any idea what one of these would be worth? Or if theres a better upgrade option for this sort of price range?

I am preety sure its better buy quite abit since my X800XTPE was able to best a 6800Ultra.

That last one is a bit :S

the 7800GTX is much better than an x850xt-pe?

calnen, as for prices, i'd expect they're worth about £60-£70 for an AGP varient, not too sure how much the pci-e one would be worth

Yea the 7800GTX is much better but in old 3d marks like 2001 these older cards tend to get higher scores, so obviously in a game the 7800GTX will be miles in front :)

Thanks for the replies guys :) Now just have to decide if its worth the money!

How much you paying? for £100-£120 you could get an X1950Pro, dunno if the AGP ones cost more though.

In newer DX9 titles the 7800GTX is indeed quicker, however remember the X850XTPE was stupidly quick at DX9b titles (SM2.0). (ie it was much quicker than the 6800U in some games at the time when it was no 1).

I had both cards and the 850 stomped the 6800 in pretty much everything. The difference in Image Quality was the thing i noticed most.

Remeber the 6800 supports SM3 but the x800 series doesn't... not that it makes huge differences in most games...

I'd say the 850XT could show upto 30% better performance in some games/benchies...

Deffenitly get the X850, anything that required SM3.0 wont exatly run good on a 6800 :p, I think that really though tbh you should look for an X1950Pro.

Interestingly clock for clock the 850XT and 6800GT have identical performance potential on paper... but actual benchmarks don't show as huge difference as the clocks should suggest... so if you _could_ get your 6800GT upto a 520MHz clock to match the x850 you'd prolly beat it quite a bit... unfortunatly I don't know of any GT that will clock that far without voltmod and water cooling...

I dont think it was just clocks that made the X850 better, proberbly was the architecture of the R420 cores.

I bought it :) The reason I wasnt looking at newer cards was that money's a big limitation. In my final year at uni so the overdraft's pretty close to maximum :o

Thanks for the advice all!

actually I was saying... for its clock speed it doesn't benchmark as well as it should... the x850 xt is identical pixel pipelines/rops, etc. wise to a 6800GT it just has a massively higher core clock and slightly faster memory clock... a 6800 clocked to the same level would based on the benchmarks and some extrapolation beat it by a bit.

^^ Fanboy alert :)

The X850XT is superior. I've seem them fetch about £45-50 on the auction site. Not bad.
I got my hands on an X1800XT 512mb with after market cooling for just over £80. If it actually works then it will rate as one of my best bang for buck's ever :)

Yea not to mention the aparent superior picture quality of the X8** series, that card was a stunning card in its day, I was more than happy with my X800XTPE which plays allot of modern games at very good settings concidering its age and if my X800XTPE was out doing a 6800Ultra, how good will the X850XTPE, I was gonna but an HIS X850XTPE for £280 in september 2005, but it got put back to £330 so I got an Asus X800XTPE :(
