been running an intel x9650 extreme CPU in my video workstation for a year or so.. it's been running at stock and seemingly quite happy..
upon re installing the system I decided to look at it a bit more closely and maybe push the speed a bit..
Initially I noticed that the first 2 cores where running quite a bit warmer than the other 2, at idle but more so at full load. 35 deg for the lower temp and 55 deg for the hotter 2
I had a look with prime and it was putting all cores to 100% but the cooler 2 wherent crunching at the same pace..
I managed to find a little app that shows the CPU core speeds in real time and I found the problem...
it seems that the cooler running cores aren't maintaining the full core speed under load of 3ghz. they keep dropping back to 2ghz while the other 2 stay at 3ghz...
rendering in premiere it does fluctuate up and down a bit more as it works on separate threads, but It still don't seem able to hold the max speed.
even manually increasing the core multi or specifying only the 2 problem cores made lite or no difference..
I don't seem to be having any other stability problems.. but clearly something's up.. so any ideas? it's got me stumped...
cheers
Andy.
