I'm currently speccing an X99 / 5820K upgrade, and am a bit confused by my DDR4 memory options regarding speed. I'm using the OCUK pre-overclocked bundles as a guide, and I'd like to overclock the 5820k up to a steady 3.8 - 4.0GHz. The OCUK bundles use 2400 DDR4 memory, which from my reading is above the base 2133MHz DDR4 speed that X99 uses. So - what happens when I plug in 2400MHz memory? Does is run at 2400 or get clocked down to 2133? Is running it at 2400 an advantage? Is 2800 an even better option?
The last overclock I did was on my current rig as in my sig, where FSB and memory were tied to the CPU frequency... looks like things have changed!

Current thinking is the following setup:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte X99-SLI - Intel Core i7 5820K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle ***£50 Saving*** £393.98
1 x Samsung 512GB SSD 850 PRO SATA 6Gbps 3D NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-7KE512BW) £209.99
1 x Kingston Fury Black 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C15 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (HX424C15FBK4/16) £109.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H75 Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060015-WW) £66.95
Total : £790.51 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

A bit of advice re. memory would be welcome, thanks in advance...

I could be wrong, but I believe 2400MHz will just work out of the box - Above 2600MHz (2666MHz?) , you have to enable it via XMP in the bios.

So 2400 out of the box is an advantage over 2133? Probably a daft question! A small performance gain? From what I've read overclocking the memory on these systems doesn't really yield much of a real-world benefit?

You'd be correct. There's no real world difference between ram speeds in all honesty. Although a website did a review where 3200MHz was giving them a few extra FPS, although nothing between 2400 and 3000 was giving them a difference, strange eh?

I'd take it with a pinch of salt and just get whichever kit matches the aesthetics of your build.

P.S: How do you do the basket thing?

I have the ripjaws 4 3000mhz and it runs great, no XMP required in the bios. Although did need to update my bios for it to adjust the voltage properly from 0802, but mine is a different board and you shouldnt have that problem.

2400mhz-3000mhz wouldnt be a massive difference maybe a few fps, helps for desktop and app use. I went for mine because it was on sale and for asthetics as it matched my red build.

Id go mainly on asthetics rather than speed unless you can get them for a very similar price.

Id get the h110i GT if you can afford it and plan on overclocking, great cooler as the 6 core chips get pretty hot. I used to have the h110i GT and was very impressed with its performance and looks, kept my 5930k mid 70s while running Aida64 and mid 50s while in game. All at 4.5ghz. Dont run prime95, bad for 6 cores.

Cheers! That basket thing is my second use of this feature - I asked the same question yesterday! 'Stulid' pointed me here.

Quite nifty!

Thanks for the info, pretty straightforward then. I'd love to go for the H110i GT, but my case has no 140mm fan exhausts, just a 120mm at the back and only an 80mm at the top, that's why H75 was my choice...
