X99 or Z170

I'm told that Skylake doesn't add much if anything in the way of performance. The only reason to go for it now is if you think you'll be getting a CPU upgrade before the mobo architecture changes. Otherwise, you may as well stick with the tried and tested.

If only gaming - Skylake. No point having the extra cores when you don't need them imo.

When the extra cores/threads end up costing no extra though, jump on them y'know.

Besides the extra cores will add some nice overhead for windows when playing games making anything else you decide to do at the time run smoother.

and with upcoming API's (DX12) the extra cores threads may be favourable from the looks of things :).

Cheaper Ram for the X99 build

I would go X99 :)

You might want to up the psu a bit if you plan on SLI. Maybe 850W or so. A 650w would be fine for a single card.

I did go X99 the day after skylake came out as thought it was disappointing have not regretted going x99 5820K

I think the above comment is correct regard SLI and 850W but if you don’t want to go SLi the EVGA 750W is exactly what I got and I can’t hear it.

Only other thing I would suggest is go with a Retail 5820K for the 3 year warranty its worth the money presently £12 difference
:)

Ps overclocked mine to 4.0Ghz on 1.075v on a cheapish Air cooler with reasonable temps the cores vary between 65-68c under AIDA64

The general census I am getting is that x99 is the way to go. Tbf the Micro 2 is also the correct colour for the all black theme im going for.

Dual channel or Quad channel for the memory. The Micro 2 only has 4 ram slots unlike the ATX versions so I'm not sure whether I should go for the 4x8gb (future proofing) or to stick with a 4x4gb or even get a dualm channel kit 2x8gb and add 2 later on.

Also I was going to put a shroud on the motherboard tray either all plastic or all metal to give it a clean look.

Can the x99 or z170 motherboards overheat if they dont have airflow on the back side of the board? the shroud will only overlap the underneath of the mobo by about 10mm all round.
