Been years since I built and spec'd a PC, until recently I was a Q9550 until the motherboard failed, so I sold CPU and RAM off.

So looking for a new barebones, motherboard, CPU and RAM.

Been tempted by the Assus X99-S motherboard and CPUS bundle.

I don't game, more interested in a fast PC that could also do virtualisation.

GFX card HD5870 is what I have knocking around, i know it's power hungry and runs hot.

Suggestions? Other thought is to ditch my old HP monitor 20" not go X99 and get a new monitor, short sighted - probably.
got lots of SSD/HDD.

Budget £500-600 I think.

Hi,

What programs do you use for virtualization??

Is it very RAM heavy?

What SSDs have you got? SATAIII?

Sata 3 6/Gbs 250GB and got 3 x 1TB HDDs which I'll run in RAID 5

Will be using Windows 8.1 hyper visor and VM workstation

I'll be looking at 16GB+ RAM

Is it work considering the X79 platform instead and with DD3, do like the thought of an X99, but how much of a price premium is it really...

X99 is good for Hyper-V but a 4790 would also work well. I use both and the X99 is faster for more demanding work and can take more RAM.

You could go X99 for not much more than Z97:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80648I75820K) £289.99
1 x MSI X99S SLI Plus Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £159.95
1 x Crucial 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-17000C16 2133MHz Quad Channel Kit (CT4K4G4DFS8213) £146.99
Total : £606.53 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Well it's £150 more:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £259.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11T3K2/16) £129.95
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £61.99
Total : £461.53 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Also you've got to think about cooling,as i doubt your cooler you have will work (and i don't think the 5820k comes with a stock cooler (the 4790k does but for anything but stock its useless)..

Its £150 if you go for a low end Z97 mainboard but most of them are £100+.

Got a Noctua cooler that I can can convert I think, but long term will get a Corsair CPU H series cooler I think. Not going to be over clocking
