guys, in my basket I have the:

Intel i7 5820K
Asus X99 Pro Mobo

What ram do i need as i do not have a clue on what to get, I know I need DDR4 and I see that right now 16gb is suffice but what Mhz?

can you please recommend compatible ram at average pricing plz, thanks

oh guys just to add, i only use my PC for gaming and nothing else, currently using 2560x1440, not that it makes any difference on what resolution u use...

Hi again,

Since you are going X99 and X99 does not benefit as much as Z170 from high speed memory, any kit should suffice. Anything above 2600MHz will need some tinkering in the BIOS with XMP profiles, just for your information.

Aesthetics matter a lot when it comes to RAM really, if you'd like a 16gb kit of white RAM to match your X99 Pro, as well as high speed, something like this would be sufficient:

YOUR BASKET
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz Quad Channel Kit - White (TLWED416G3000HC16AQC01) £129.95
Total : £129.95 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

If aesthetics and speed matter less, something like this is a good choice, and also fairly cheap.

YOUR BASKET
1 x TeamGroup Elite 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (TPKD416GM2400HC16QC01) £94.99
Total : £94.99 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

oh, so the higher the number the faster the ram? so ddr4 3000+ is better? i thought the smaller the number the better, but i'll stick to the 3000 then

and also 4x4 is the same as 2x8 right, just less space for future upgrades?

yes. There's 8 slots on your mobo. If you fill it with 4Gb sticks then you'll have a max of 32. Fill it with 8Gb sticks then you can have 64Gb.
Unless you're planning to run a lot of VM's then I can't see the need for any more than 16Gb.

You are getting confused with CAS Latency, often abbreviated as CL*. The lower the CL, the better, but at the same time, it also depends on the frequency (3000MHz, for instance, is the rated frequency of the RAM)

I am not educated enough to tell you how it works, but all I know is that for day to day use you are not going to notice a difference between CL15 and CL16.

The higher the frequency (3000MHz, for instance), the higher the CAS latency tends to be. So 2400MHz @ CL15 would be worse than 3000MHz @ CL15, but again, it's nothing a regular user would notice, nor is it worth the premium lower latency tends to come with.

As for 4x4 being the same as 2x8 - Kinda. The X99 platform utilises quad-channel memory so 4x4 would be better in terms of speed than 2x8gb. - 4x4gb would be sufficient for now and if you need it, you can add another 4x4gb kit later on for a total of 32gb... Which I don't see a gamer using for a long time.

Picked up some of the TeamGroup Vulcan 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C16 3000MHz Quad Channel Kit - Red - on offer last week.

Fo far no issues running at 3000MHz XMP profile
