Hi Guys,

I'm looking to build an X99 gaming system having recently sold my gaming laptop. Going to build this in January.

I wanted to go Micro-ATX as I really love the look of the Bitfenix Phenom (the nvidia edition especially).

Here's what I have come up with, let me know what you think I should change:

MOBO: EVGA X99 Micro Intel X99 - £200
Processor: 5820k - £300
RAM: Crucial 16GB - £156
PSU: Bitfenix fury 650W gold - £90
Cooler: Corsair H80/90/100 (?) £70-90
GPU: GTX970 reference - £320

Total: circa £1000

I have an SSD already and a hard drive.

I will also being doing 3D work, photoshop, video editing and Unreal Engine 4.

I'm looking to spend about £1000 on parts (excluding the cooler and case, I can live without both for a month or 2)

Also, is there any reason I shouldn't be going MATX other than the obvious (connections, space etc) are MATX boards inherently less powerful??

I'm not looking to SLI but MIGHT overlock the CPU (petty unlikely but maybe)

Thanks in advance!

Go Z97, it will be faster than X99 for gaming as not many games use 6cores/12 threads and the pure clock speed of something like a 4790k will beat the X99 in most gaming scenarios

Do you not require hard drives/SSD?

mATX builds are great, most ATX features can now be fitted onto mATX boards :) Normally it's just I/O that's affected

Sorry, yes I really should have said, I will also being doing a lot of 3Ds Max, Photoshop, video editing, and Unreal Engine 4 work.

I will make good use of the cores!

And no, I have an SSD and many hard drives.

i'll edit the first post to clear that up...

Ah okay, I see now. Then yep, I expect it's worth going for extra cores. Are you sure about having no case though? I'd want to keep the components safe in a housing instead of lying them on a desk etc where someone can drop a brick on it or something? :p

That PSU isn't the best choice either, here's what I'd do

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80648I75820K) £299.99
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £275.99
1 x EVGA X99 Micro Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard £199.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (TPKD416GM2400HC16QC01) £185.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H105 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060016-WW ) £89.99
1 x Seasonic M12II EVO Edition 850W '80 Plus Bronze' Fully Modular Power Supply £79.99
Total : £1,141.54 (includes shipping : £8.00).

You'll need to check the components fit into your case of choice though ofc - you set on the Phenom?

Your estimates total £1156, but spending a bit less tihs could be better;

That is totally what i'd suggest too.

For non-OCing you don't need a massive cooler, the themis will keep the heat and noise down while being very cheap.

The PSU is top notch, though non-modular,but the phenom is big enough to do some cable management.

It is modular  All the better! Unless you meant the cheaper spec?

Ha, I have an old case I can chuck it all in for now, so no worries there!

1 x GALAX GeForce GTX 970 EX OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (97NQH6DNB4UX) £251.99 - Interesting, this is a £70 saving I guess, but I was worried about heat and hear that the reference design is best for that?

1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £59.99 - I was really looking for modular, again, due to heat and cable management/space in a small case.
1 x Raijintek Themis Black Heatpipe CPU Cooler PWM - 120mm £19.99 - I wanted to go for a watercooler to be honest, I really hate these big bulky CPU coolers taking up all the room!

I did, you switched the specs around on me.. :(

@OP:

1) The Galax isn't a reference cooler. Its a great cooled card for a very good price.. Only for the time being to as its EOL.

2) Theres more than enough roomin the phenom for cable management. What is your current case?

3) You'll just have to fork out a little more, thats all. The TD03 springs to mind.

Well, I personally have played with the GALAX GPU and it's incredibly quiet and cool, so no worries there. However with the small form factor you could obviously go for a blower cooler as you said

The themis (as doomed said) is very good, quiet and runs cool. I don't see the point of a watercooler here, the themis is more than adequate - also the WC units are more expensive, so that's your choice!

PSU, here are some other choices. The bitfenix is quite overpriced imo

1) I'm looking at this: link I'm just struggling with the extra money, is it really worth it for the heat reductions? will I suffer that much with a cheaper and slightly faster one?

2) I'm going from a laptop, but I do have old crappy case I put it in for now, probably about antec 300 size...either way I will buy the phenom eventually

3) TD03 looks nice

what about this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-014-SF&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=2463

is 650w overpowered for this?

850W PSU for a 5820K and a single GTX 970? You can run that off a decent 450W! Unless you're going to SLI in the future, but if that's the case then don't get a Phenom.

In fact I wouldn't go for the Phenom at all - if you want mATX in a small footprint look at the Silverstone TJ08E.

Anything else I need to consider?

I am really looking forward to building this. :D

The5820k doesn't come with a cooler, so you'll need one. :)

Agreed, though i wouldn't go SLI in a TJ08-E either. I have a TJ08-E and its a stunning case, they now do a version with a window too. I'd reccomend it for a single card setup hands down but gettinga big PSU in there is an issue, i struggled with a 160mm PSU.

Yeah 850W is way to much.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I would have gone for the 650W superflower Gold but the 850w is only £4 extra...

I fully understand that the 850 is more than is needed, but is there any reason why I absolutely shouldn't go for the 850 over the 650, considering the negligible price difference?

Also, looking at the modular ones they are 200mm, which I might struggle with in the Phenom, might go for one of the shorter ones anyway.

There's nothing wrong with having too much power available, but if you're only using a fraction of the unit's rated output then you won't hit the efficiency sweet spots. Ultimately it's negligible to electricity use and cost, but some units can have dodgy power delivery (like lots of ripple or spikes) if you're not near the efficiency range.

It's rare though, so don't worry, and it's not like your system is drawing a mere 20W or anything :-P

I'd say at full tilt you'd draw about 350W, so that's 54% load for the 650W unit and 41% load for the 850W - the 650W would actually be running more efficiently than the 850W in this case. But as I said it's negligible in the real world. In either case you have more than enough juice available to clock the pants of both CPU and GPU (case and cooling permitting). 850W would be good for SLI in the future, but even with the super-cool 970s I wouldn't SLI in a Phenom.
