You don't want to use the EL panel anyway, transformer makes an incredibly irritating screeching noise when powered up and can work its way into your headphones/speakers.

Bit late to reply to this but, I've had my Xaser III well over 4 years and it's as sturdy as a rock.

My lighting unit at the front has both a molex and a small black connector for power, I've always used the molex though. I've NEVER had any kind of noise come from the black box!
