Hi, loving XBMC and slowly getting all my films onto it.

Couple of questions.

I ripped originally all my DVD's using 'MakeMKV' then 'Handbrake' as before I got XBMC, I used a external HD x1TB through my PS3 to view movies.

Is there no need to rip them to MP4 now. Can I just rip to .MKV and XBMC will play them fine? (would save some time)

Now the main bit I need guidance with.

Some Music/Film Videos as we all know have extras. Most of the titles I am not bothered about. Some I would like.

Can someone explain to me in 'laymans' terms how on earth to add them to XBMC so they show up all nice like the rest of my films. Be it in TV Shows or Movies.

I cannot work it out.

Thanks.

Are you wanting the disc to behave like one with the menus? If so MKV's don't currently support menus at all. You can however rip to an ISO and that will preserve everything on the disc - however for a bluray this can be 30gb.

I use DVDFab, it's a very easy few click solution and rips to any format there is.

no not bothered about menus. Just some music dvd's and film dvd's for eg: bloopers I would like to be able to use within XBMC. Just cant work out how to add them into it.

Again try DVDFab, that quite clearly shows you the length of the title you are about to rip which you can correlate with the playtime on disc, you just tick the ones you want and it will create separate files for each

I have the files. Thats no problem. I have all the extra's ripped as MKV and I can play them in 'file' view within XBMC, just cant get them into Library view now.

What I would like is a way to add my extras/bloopers from certain films/music dvd's into 'Library' View within XBMC

Ahh - got you.

Have you tried renaming them the same as the film to see if it scrapes the info? you could then edit the nfo file that is created to give the info about the clip rather than the movie or disc.

Only things that have been added to the XBMC internal database will be available in Library mode.

XBMC will not index info for things like extras because as far as I'm aware there isn't a database for it to scrape the info from such TVDB.com it uses for TV Shows or MovieDB.com for movies.

ISO is the easiest and best way to do it if you want to watch the extras from your Library mode view.

what is this ISO you speak of?

I usually use 'Makemkv' to rip everything. Some 'series' i have problems with and have just tried to rip using DVDShrink
Which gives me lots of files split into Audio_TS and Video_ts folders, (BUP, IFO and VOB files are in the video folder but nothing in the audio folder)

How do I sort these files for XBMC ? do I have to rename them to something and if so which ones?

bit lost on this, when it is a .MKV it works perfectly....

For Movies, an ISO file simply creates an image of the disc therefore retaining all DVD content including menu's, subs, extras etc.

.MKV does currently support menus so to retain your extra content and be able to view them in Library mode you'll need to rip them to an ISO file. XBMC will simply play the file as if it was the original DVD and you wont know any different.

DVDShrink is easily capable of creating the ISO file you you just need to change the Target Device to ISO and it will do it. Info here

You wont need to name them in anyway just place the ISO file in a folder and name the folder the same as the Movie.

For the current Audio & Video TS folder that you have now, place them into a folder named after the Movie and you are good to go.

For TV Shows however I rip each individual episode using MakeMKV and name them S01E01.mkv etc. I dont know of a way to rip TV Show DVD's as a DVD file structure and have it scrape the info automatically.

Hope that helps buddy.

Many thanks. That answered so many of my questions very easily.
I thank you.

I have ripped all my DVD's to MKV. Is that ok or should I have used .ISO ?

Bear in mind 99% of the time I will be using XBMC to watch them on.

Once again. Thank you for explaining it easily.

Ultimately "it depends" Magic.

If you've ripped to MKV you'll probably find that what you've ripped is just the movie "track".

There will have been other tracks on there that you could additionally rip to separate MKV files that, like you point out, you can play in File View but as there is no information about the extras in any of the movie scrapper sites it won't show up in Library view.

If you rip to an ISO then what you get is the full disc including all the extras and menus in one file. If you name this ISO or put in a correctly named folder then XBMC will identify the ISO as the movie and it will show that in Library View. When playing an ISO through XBMC you will be presented with the DVD menu and you'll use it like you normally would.

The same is true for the "video_ts" folders you have been able to produce. This is just a direct copy of the DVD contents and if put in a correctly named folder it will show up in Library View and XBMC should be able to play it (again, showing you the DVD menu)

No problem fella, happy to help whenever I can.

There's nothing wrong with the MKV's you've already ripped and there is no right & wrong way of ripping. It simply depends what you want the end results to be.

If you wanted to retain the extras and commentary's etc then its probably worth doing them again as ISO's.
