I heard there are problems getting smooth video playback on XBMC if the data is coming from a NAS drive, is this true?

I was so close to getting the Freecom 500Gb network drive (silver metal one) and then i heard about this problem, but it comes as a surprise as i thought ethernet of all things would be fast enough

right now i have a usb2 drive connected to laptop and that streams to the xbox just fine, but i hear that the small processors on NAS drives can be trouble?

Have you been able to set up a shared folder on the USB drive??? I wanted to do this but couldn't get XBMC to access the share, it just caused the Xbox to lock up.

yeah i have a whole 500gb drive shared and the xbox picks it up, i cant remember there being any issues.

start by sharing a folder on your pc first, if that works just plug the drive in and share a folder within the root and see if that works

Not all NAS's are equal.. there are a few at the cheap end that certainly may struggle to stream a DVD, you need a constant 10Mbps read rate I'd say...

head over to http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/85/93/ they have reviewed loads, and have the NAS Charts to see what's what..

amazing, that site has every drive except the Freecom one i'm looking at, what are the chances

Did you get any further with this? I was planing on doing the same.
I've got 2x USB2 drives and i'm planning on getting a linksys nslu2 at some point, but i dont need it for a while so it wont be any time soon

the logic being that for £50, the nslu2 will let me connect 4+ drives to the network, which works out cheaper than paying £30 extra per drive for the built-in NAS function
